Instant tracking for a Droid?

Sorry if this has been asked before...and please point to the right thread if it has.

I never got around to buying a Spot....nor a GPS for that matter, never felt the need.

I have had a smart phone for some time now, seems pointless to buy a Spot or a stand alone GPS now.

Is there good app for instant tracking? I really need this so my girlfriend knows that I am ok on my moto rides, would be great if she could see where I am located in real time. Would like an app that saves the routes as well...I looked at the app store...but there are so many I do not know which one to use.

I found a couple, but neither do what I am looking for together...one records tracks, but no real time...the other vice-a-versa.

www.dualsportmaps.com Also Google Latitude would have a real time update and is free.

The only downside to having your GPS running on a phone is the battery dies rather quickly. You would need to be plugged into power for prolonged rides.

Thank you Frank!

I have google latitude...didn't know there was instant tracking on it, just location update...does it record tracks as well?

I have a 12V port on the bike, so battery life isn't an issue.

The purpose of a Spot is to send a "ok" or a "help" request via satellite. Cell phones will not be able to offer that when out of cell range.

Is there a GPS device that does the same? I can't seem to find one. The thing I don't like about the Spot is...no screen. Seems like having a spot and a separate gps is redundant especially when space is a at a premium on a motorcycle.

I don't even like using maps, but the girlfriend is getting on me for going out by myself...so if I am going to buy a device, I would like to have both abilities in one platform.

Google latitude would track you in real time, yes.

Thanks Frank...I'll give it whirl...if it doesn't work...might have to break down and buy a Spot...would be nice if my $2520.00/Year smart phones would do the job, tho'...

If all you want is the ability for someone to see where you are, you should check out an app called Maprika. Its available on both iOS and Android. When its on someone with the same app can see where you are.

It also has a really cool feature where you can upload your own maps from a jpeg. I downloaded national forest maps off the internet and installed them into the app. Now when I'm offroad its the primary map I use.

Only downside is the tracking doesn't work if you don't have an internet connection.

imo dual sport maps is awsome, im running it on my droid tablet and am very happy with it, i havnt played with the real time tracking yet on the comp but i should, i got an external bluetooth GPS puck that will be hard wired to my bike when i get the time so i can link it with my tablet or iphone. you could also consider getting a spot connect, or the delorme in-touch, the delorme is nice because it links up with there GPS's as well.

I love it for mapping and tracking on my droid... However, there are no features like the Spot with it. No cell coverage means no contacting someone. However, you can download maps ahead of time and still track and map with no cell coverage. This one program has kept me from converting over to an Iphone or Ipad. Good luck! Let us know if you find the perfect solution to your needs. We are always looking for better!
