Interesting water filter/storage solution - LifeSaver Jerry Can

I was intrigued by the Graham's review of the LifeSaver bottle in his OJ writeup on water filtration. In doing some additional reading about the LifeSaver bottle I stumbled across their jerry can that uses the same technology. They offer it in 10,000 and 20,000 liter cartridge lifespans. Assuming the same filtering capabilities as what Graham tested with the bottle, this could be a great, portable water solution that fits in a standard jerry can space. It appears to be a quick method of filtering 5 gallons at a time. I am intrigued, though it is a little pricey (about $300 for the one fitted with the 10,000 liter cartridge).

That is pretty clever. I would like to see the stats on that one run through the same test Graham did for OJ. Although from their site specs it looks like it filters the same.

The filter is indeed the same as the one we tested for the OJ article. Just a more overland friendly package. Too bad it wasn't released in time for the filter review. I believe that Mario will be modifying the AT jerry can holder to accommodate this new solution.

Im very interested to hear your thoughts on the jerrycan...Build quality, maintenance/storage issues ....most importantly.... Would you feel comfortable using it for long term use ?

My initial issue is its self life....3 years if untouched...5 years if " maintained correctly "

Id love to be able to strap it to my truck in an emergency.....but who knows when a emergency happens.

Much appreciated.

Cool idea, but You could add something like this inline of filling you jerry can, then you can use the ones you already have. i have one of these in my truck just in case haven't had to use it ever but i got it if i need it.

Thats cool...ive been a Sub of NCHiker for a year now....but he uses bleach to treat his water...then run it through a charcoal filter.

Im looking for a clean/simple solution like a pump but sized up for family/extended use.

I do think this is good for a back up to keep in the truck. Bleach is handy for a lot of uses.

thanks,

rob

I know this does not fit into a Jerry Can location, but it is something I have been looking into. Reliance also makes a water jug with a built in .3micron filter

I use their 7gal Jumbo-Tainer for our trips and thought about purchasing the filter seperatly for 'Just in Case'

Here is the information on the filter

Be careful, as this one does not remove virii like the Lifesaver jerrycan does.

You can also look into the Sawyer purifier system and use the parts to connect to cans to make it more durable and not have to pump water. These will remove virii just like the LifeSaver will, with a one million gallon or liter guarantee (I don't remember what it says on the package - practically, you won't live to see the end of the cartridge life).

I am looking to buy Lifesaver jerry can for our 2 years trip through Russia, Central Asia and Australia. Anyone has practical experience with it?
Thanks for any suggestions.

MSR Sweetwater

Greetings!

Several years ago I purchased the military version of the MSR Sweetwater. Out of curiosity I filter a 12 ounce bottle of coke and it removed the syrup & sugar and it tasted like water.

Out in the field I've used it for hiking and its serviceable in the field as it has a ceramic filter and charcoal filter. It even filters chlorine out of the water. I carry it for emergencies and love it.

Kind regards
