Internal 2014 LR4 information

It is absolutely true. This engine has been in play for almost a year, in the Jaguar lineup (XF, XJ, and F-Type) and also in the Range Rover HSE and Sport HSE. The 2013 Range Rover HSE 5.0 was rated at 14/20mpg. The 2014 Range Rover HSE 3.0 is rated at 17/23. (Thats a 15-20% increase in mileage). The engine is the only thing that was changed.

Some other interesting news I learned this morning:

2014 LR4 will be a very short model year. Look for an all-new 2015 "Discovery" late summer 2014.

Range Rover LWB will be launched at the LA Auto Show and will be available 1st quarter 2014.

The LR2 will be replaced by a "mini Discovery" late 2014.

Land Rover is committed to bringing diesels and/or hybrids (maybe diesel hybrids) to North America. No public timeline.

Defender is still 4-5 years out.

And having driven one before placing my order, I have absolutely no concerns with the performance of that engine in the Range Rover. I just wish that it was possible to get the V6 in the SC and/or Autobiography models as some of the options in those 2 models aren't available on the HSE, but I absolutely wanted the gas mileage of the V6.

Defender is still 4-5 years out.
It will be interesting to see where they end up going with the Defender replacement.

If Land Rover plays their cards right, there may be some very exciting times ahead for them and their customers.

Geoff, what options were you looking for that you could not get on the HSE? The HSE and SC can be optioned just about identically. The ATB is a different story.

You're right that there isn't much that can't be had on the HSE. But there were a few things that I probably would have sprung for if they were available, such as the 1700W Meridian Signature Reference audio system (AB only on the RR, but available as an option on the RR Sport SC), the active rear locking differential (SC and AB only), and semi-aniline leather (AB only). Even though I wanted those items, I didn't want them badly enough to give up the V6 engine or make the big jump in MSRP for the AB version.

There were several options available on the HSE that I didn't get, such as parallel park assist, adaptive cruise control, soft door close, four zone climate comfort pack, and rear seat entertainment as I have no need for them and decided to save the money. Otherwise, I went with most of the available options. Last I heard, it's due for delivery just before Christmas. Hopefully the rumors I've heard of shortages of the panoramic roof panels won't delay my order - but if it does, it means I'll have time to put even more money aside for the down payment.

Back on topic, I think that once people actually get a chance to drive the SC V6, they'll be pretty impressed with the performance. I think the gas mileage improvement far outweighs a relatively minor loss in 0-60 times.

Yes, but torque curves also tell the story, not just HP. The 2014 LR4 will still weigh as much as it ever did; and although the SCV6 may be a boon to the RR(S) that have shed hundreds of pounds, it may be a big step back for the beefy LR4. I never cared about 0-60 times; I care more about a 5 mile haul changing elevation from 1000' to 5000'. How will the SCV6 do with that??

I'm intrigued by transientmechanic's comment that 2014 will be a short model year for the LR4. It sounds like LR is gearing up quickly to get the new aluminum frame on the LR4 as well. That's when the SCV6 will certainly make sense.
I've been thinking of (finally) trading in my Disco II for the 2014 LR4; but what to do now? wait for the 'LR5'??

I'm new to the forum....and was wondering. Was the info, about the 3.0L SCV6 having the same block as the 5.0L V8, but with only the front 6 cylinders, a joke? I did a little arithmetic, and thought that 6 out of 8 cylinders from a 5.0L displacement makes for 3.75L, not 3.0. Unless they bored the V8 block differently......

I've asked the dealer for torque curves and they can't find them or Land Rover isn't making them public. Agreed, the SCV6 is a better powerplant once the LR4 sheds 800lbs but towing reintroduces the weight issue.

If you are towing at altitude, get the V8. At 5000' your down 16-17% on power, even with supercharging. Now some here will say that the SCV6 compensates for altitude but again, let's see some curves!

I have seen this too but am skeptical if it will really happen. I would really consider a LR5 if it would be available as a true diesel or diesel hybrid.

Inside sources tell me the next generation of "LR" models, LR2 and LR4, will both be badged as Discovery. Unknown at this time how they will be differentiated in name. Land Rover is restructuring their brand with three "pillars"- Range Rover (luxury), Discovery (leisure/lifestyle), and Defender (4wd utility). The Range Rover line was the first to get the overhaul, and you have seen the success it has achieved. The Discovery line is next... to be followed by Defender in a few years.

Overall I'm glad Land rover is updating their vehicle line. More options and better vehicles, what is there not to like?

The still have to figure out what to do with the Defender. That is going to be a big issue but if they start taking engines and transmissions from their other line ups, then they've got a good base to start with.

It makes you wonder why Land Rover stuffed the new SCV6 petrol engine, 8-sp tranny and revised single speed transfer case in the current, aging and bloated platform if they were planning to introduce its all-new replacement so soon? Why even bother for one very short model year, let the LR4 die in MY2014 with the NAV8, transmission and transfer case it's always had, and come out with the new, lighter V6 powered replacement platform as a 2015MY a few months later, kinda like they did with the old and new Sport this year.

Chevy did the same thing. Gen 3 V8s in the C/K series trucks and SUVs.

That is using the old noodle. Get it all tested out on the old platform so its sorted out when it hits the new platform.
