Intro! Tell me about the GMT400 K3500- looking at a 4-dr. Chevy 6.5L turbodiesel 4x4

Hi folks- recent prowler for the last month or two but first post here. Tens of thousands of forum posts on other automotive forums. I'm looking into my first potential foray into the ExPo lifestyle for me and my family with a full-size rig and build over a few years. A small, amateur EarthRoamer kinda thing on a budget that would be used pretty sparingly (not daily), at least during the build. I'm looking at a very clean 1993 Chevrolet K3500 quad-cab 6.5 mechanically injected (important, to me) turbodiesel 4x4. Not too big, but not too small. At least for Texas! It has 275k mi, is a local find in my county but I haven't seen it yet, and is said to run and drive 'excellent'. I just spoke with the seller on the phone and seems to be worthy- might go look at it Sunday. Recent, but not much needed maintenance recently since he bought it in 2007 and drove 25k mi, including to South Dakota (hoses, injectors, battery, etc). Looks to be a good price, is entirely stock except for some newer GM HD wheels, and the 20 photos show a clean truck for what it is. But I have no idea what to look for technically. I had otherwise been casually looking for comparable F-350 quad-cab 4x4s with the IDI until I came across this. I'm a garage mechanic and happily (therapeutically?) comfortable turning wrenches on anything short of pulling engines or transmissions. Occasionally. Most of my experience is with European sports cars and sedans, which comprise my workday persona. This would be my first outdoors/weekend/preparedness/Home Depot rig. On a more frequent use basis, while amusing, it gets old hauling bags of mulch in an old Porsche. Oh, and liability-only insurance added to our policy is dirt cheap- just checked that as well.

A little about my ambitions here... I'm a husband and father of two young boys I'm looking forward to get them into camping and scouting in the next few years. I'm smitten with the idea of a simple, but very stout, 'bug-out' vehicle that my family and I (and perhaps the mother-in-law as well) can use to get away on long weekend trips around the region. Big Bend, Ozarks, etc. More than the core truck, I would be planning to do (and document) a proper build on here, to include potentially swapping out the bed for a utility box, and finding a cab-over pop-up camper that would fit it. Buying good used components for this along the way. The overall rig would only then start to become ExPo-ready/worthy, but will likely be a high-tech (for me) and semi-luxury (for her) vehicle that the missus and I can find common ground on to go 'camping' with. She is NOT a backpacking type like I am/once was. Trying to reclaim that as our toddler boys grow up fast! My wife is at least entertaining the idea, but isn't sold on any of this yet. But she happens to love big trucks (daily drives an Escalade ESV, had an old red '72 Chevy longbed big block in college), so I think I can pull this off. And I think my net budget over the next few years if I take the plunge is $10-15k, keeping in mind that I would be buying all good quality used components along the way with some exceptions where new makes more sense. With time, I can find an ex-commercial utility bed for a song. And then the cab-over camper, hopefully with a lavatory (long-bed truck remember), to fit it- I know these are hard to fit in this application so that's probably my biggest challenge (no standards TMK). I would paint the whole thing light tan to blend in and look decent. So, would the described truck be a good platform for my ideas? I love the modular functionality to it all that would never get old, otherwise I was going to go with a similar diesel Suburban, but that's too small. :)

I've done a lot of research on here in hundreds of pages of threads to see what you full-size guys are up to with your own rigs (man, is that whackchili guy still here? I went through the entire full-size photos thread) with similar projects and have some inspirations; wish I remembered a couple names. If your rig is similar to my description, it's probably you. Thrilled to find a group of folks like this with similar mindsets, unlike the average pickup forum. Great stuff. Thanks for the help and cheers!

Heck, here's a photo. Repainted about 5 yrs. ago, came from south Texas, no rust. DIBS if good...

Also just read this thread a few days ago from Chuck- relevant and relative to my interests!

http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...s-Looking-for-advice-on-buying-my-first-truck

P.s.: Other tidbits, I won't be towing anything, and probably not driving it more than 3k mi. a year. No loyalty to any of the big-3 in particular, but intrigued by this local offering that seems to match exactly what I'm looking for that I could probably get for a song (he's had it listed for 6 mos, hopefully that's not a bad thing, would probably get it checked out by a 3rd party/PPI). It also needs new tires, so good opportunity for uprated rubber and powdercoating.

What part of our great state are you in?

The upgraded injector pump and is well worth it. Ive got a buddy that had one. Will link him here.

Same parts of the great state as you! Not sure if the owner did the pump, but he did do the injectors recently. It gets driven about once a week- he needs a van. Contractor I think.

It also sounded like the truck probably had more highway miles on it than city, but uncertain. He's not sure what # owner he is, and of all things, I forgot to ask about the size of its maintenance records stack. I'm concerned by the mileage despite it being a diesel, and aside from the Suburbans on here, the lack of discussion on these trucks here. Really hoping these aren't crap. My wife just might let me pull the trigger on it (and wants to drive it already).

Btw, guy is asking $6k but KBB says closer to $3k, FWIW... Need data and thoughts before Sunday afternoon! Thanks, folks!

That's a clean looking truck, but I am not a fan of the GMs from that era. I would look for a 92-94 7.3 powered F350 if I were in your shoes. The ultimate would ba an early 94, with 7.3 idi and factory turbo.

Welcome to ExPo!

I recently purchased a 94 Yukon with the 6.5 liter diesel. The truck has 360000 km on it and the motor is both powerfull and clean running. The truck sat still for a year and need new batterys. It also had a diesel leak coming from the fuel filter housing. After fixing those 2 things the truck ran great. The diesel actually ran even with the fuel leak. I am impressed with the torque and the solid power. I would not hesitate to buy another one as long as it was properly maintained... Cheers Chilli..:)

Thanks! I certainly realize there are fans of all varieties here, but is there technically anything bad about this generation GM truck? I haven't heard anything in general vehicle circles to 'stay away', but down to the minutiae we're all interested in, I'm just unsure. I think these look cleaner, tow more, have seen them rated higher overall on kbb.com, and have Humvee-spec diesel motors that the F-350 doesn't. Again, not that I'm leaning toward any particular brand- I started looking at F-350s exclusively from the start. But this one seems to be calling my name. It's local, is too overkill for anyone else to likely buy near here, can be had for cheap, and ticks all the right un-brand-specific boxes that I've been planning for months. Here are the rest of the photos so you guys can see what I'm on about.

Thanks, Chilli- sounds like similar mileage to this one. Does yours have the turbo as well? I figure if the mill was robust enough for the military to put in the original H1, it's probably good enough for my needs, if properly maintained for sure. I like that they have redundant batteries- this one has new DuraLast gold tops from a year or two ago. I hope this one doesn't leak, mainly because where I would park it, is a freshly poured slab of concrete...

The mileage I'm looking to do annually is really just weekend Home Depot, family hauling help runs, and a couple long-distance regional roadtrips. Reliability is everything.

How bads you're back? Being a mechanic I figure you got one, if you do, seats are trash! You won't last and whomever sits in the passenger seats WORSE-OFF!

If you wish to replace them good luck as it'll drive you insane... as the options are few with the really high-end options outrageously beyond investing unless you feel its worth it too you. I have an all stock 2006 GMC 4X4 dually crew DuraMax and I love it! The Allison tranny is a hoot either pulling, towing, or hauling. The manual selection shift is awesome and VERY notable coming down those high elevation 15 to 20 MPH hairpens we have here in the high Sierra mountains. I haul a fully self contained 96 Lance Camper weighing about give or take loaded 4000lbs while flat towing my Jeep.

The important part for me anyway is SMOG. I have the very last year made before Government required all diesels to meet new standards. The leather fully powered seats in my truck are wonderful-NEVER causing me back problems. Heated, adjustable lumbar-Thats the ticky-tick right thar!!! Besides, whenever I crank that truck over it brings a big smile to my otherwise ugly mug!!!

I forgot another important gripe :)Wow1:) ! A/C! If you enjoy frozen knees and legs on passengers side... then by all means get this truck! It seemed very little air actually vented towards driver. I'm traumatized now thinking about this whole deal... I think I'll go and wrap my head in duck-tape!!!

My back is fine and I'm fairly young- I'm sure the seats will be acceptable for the low frequency of use they'll see. I can live with bad AC airflow for the same reason- not great concerns. Again, reliability is everything. Hey, Bakersfield- I lived there for several years growing up.

Anyone else? I'm probably going to take a look at this tomorrow afternoon. But as it's a Sunday, I won't be buying it then, and best case scenario, may even try and resist making him an offer until at least Monday.

Additionally, what's the value YOU would peg this thing at? Thanks!

Going to take a look at it late this afternoon after talking with him on the phone again. Answers to my questions:

Maintenance records? No, did most of the work himself (ed: still would have been nice to have receipts)
Last fluids change? oil 6 mos. ago, unsure on others
Any leaks? Nothing major, just a little oil
Oil pressure? Good, runs smooth
4x4 engages? Just did last night
Starts in the cold well? yes
Any smoke? no just on WOT
Batteries replaced? 2-yrs ago under warranty, also did alternator
Glow plugs? yes recently
Injector pump? no but remanufactured sticker and painted, is recent
Ball joints, tie rod ends, etc? just swaybar bushings, goes down the road straight, no wobble

Any add'l. questions I should ask when I get there? I've also got:
When were the trans and diffs flushed? Trans service?
Any CELs? Knocks?

Carfax checks out as well, FWIW.

Nice truck. Since you won't be towing with it the 6.5 turbo diesel is a good motor. It is NOT a powerhouse but gets great MPG. I think eara truck rides real well compaired to the older straight axle. While the IFS is not as strong it will be fine for what your doing. Just don't get caught up in the "you need this" or need that deal and you will be fine. If you do lift it keep it low as that will make parts last longer and maintain long distance comfort. There is a company called posi lock that makes a cable kit to get rid of the front axle disconnect that can be problematic on these trucks. If you use 4x4 a lot it would be something to look into. Good luck with it. Should be real easy to get a contracftor box for that truck as they where very popular although most I have seen near me are for duallys.

The posi lock kits are nice, but another decent option is to retrofit one of the newer electric actuators that came on the 98ish obs chevys in place of the heat actuator. I did this on my 91 which used to take a while to engage the front differential, now it is quick to go in, quick to go out, and still automatic when putting the transfer case in gear. All you need is the actual actuator and a special conversion harness, neither of which are very expensive. The Posi lock kits Grinch mentioned are also good, don't require electricity or wiring, and give you the option of 2wd low if you needed it but are more expensive.
