Solar System, Rubicon Tested.

Thanks for the kind words guys! Its been fun posting all the progress up, I can't believe I haven't ever blogged a build sooner. It's neat to go back and look at how stuff came together.

Toyo,
My solar system is actually super simple and relatively inexpensive. I bought a Coleman 55 watt solar power system from Costco (~ $300). The kit came with the three 18 watt panels, a 400w inverter and a 7 amp charge controller.

I replaced the 400watt inverter with a 1000 watt unit from West Marine. They are basically WagonTech units rebranded, and believe it or not, I think they are the same as available at HFT.

Then I stuffed the solar charge controller and the inverter, along with the dual battery solinoid into one of the forward compartments of the saddleboxes.

Here's a shot of the system setup, running the fridge and charging the battery.

SolarDeployed.JPG

For the three days we spent with engines off, my auxilliary battery never fell below 12 volts... and we ran lights all night while we drank like the fish we caught the next morning.

Speaking of the battery, I followed the recommendation of many here on this board as well as Paul at Equipt and went with the Diehard Platnium. It was a pricey unit, no doubt, but I wanted something that will last me a long time and be able to take some punishment. They have a three year warrantee, and side posts that allowed me to wire everything up the way I wanted so I spent the extra money for the piece of mind and convienince. The last thing I want is a battery problem after putting all this effort forth on building this whole system.

Just got a picture CD from a friend in the mail. He snapped alot of shots of our Jeepers Jamboree trip this year. Enjoy

My favorite on-trail shot from this year. Thanks Billy!

Here's a nice shot of my Dads rig. TJ with M416. Both very nice.

Rigs coming in. They say more than 600 came through this year for the 60th anniversary of the Jeepers Jamboree.

Drinking under the Foxwing. The awning is the best addition I've made to my rig in a long time. It just draws people in to come and hang out.

Thanks Adam, maybe we'll see each other in there one day. We have our 'family trip' coming up in Oct and we're going back into the Springs.

Toyotech, no worries. I still have a few ideas that will make it even better. Stay tuned!

Next project coming up, I'm getting back to my food prep stuff. Looking at that chuck box idea and thinking I can make something work there to hold the bbq and a single burner stove. Just need to get a bunch of stuff out for 'other people' at work before I can tinker with my own stuff.

It's been a while since you posted any updates. You mentioned food prep? Anything to report?

Loving the build, sure hope it hasn't fallen by the wayside!
