IPhone 5s as photographer's tool

Austin Mann is a pro photographer. He recently took the iPhone 5 and 5s on a trip to Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia. He found the 5s camera to be improved in several ways:
-- improved dynamic range
-- dynamic exposure metering while in panorama mode
-- burst mode
-- 120 fps slow motion video
-- shutter lag reduced so it's no longer a consideration
-- faster processor speeds up photo enhancing apps like Snapseed

"Capturing the Aura of the Scottish Highlands With the iPhone 5s"

Capturing the aura my ********. Those are very ordinary photos, happy snaps really. The only one that comes close is the statue in the church and even then the composition is bad with no separation between it and other statue. The sea and boat shot has blown-out highlights, the island and trees shot has very uneven light and the colour balance of the cave shot is terrible. Did I miss anything...oh yes, the flagpole is cut off in the castle shot.

Man I'm sick of people getting accolades because of who they are. He may well be a very good photographer but those photos don't show it, they are very sub-standard, especially for an NG photographer.

Yeah the boundaries between still/video/phone are blurring more every day. I think I should sell my DSLR gear while it's still worth something :)

AFAIK no long tele lenses on cameras yet though, not that I've checked lately.

My God, what effective focal length is that? Or has someone just glued a phone to the back of a telescope :)

Ha ha, just when I think I've seen everything. So far the smartphone phenomenon has totally passed me by.

I admit though that the concept of "fine" photography and archival prints (my roots) seems to have largely disappeared and even I am thinking of ditching my DSLR gear and swapping to video.

Lately when I've been out hiking with two 75lb dogs on leashes, taking the Nikon D200 and trying to get a shot really doesn't work. I've been shooting a few photos with my iPhone 4S and have been surprised by the quality. I just got a 5s a week or so back and haven't had a chance to try it yet. However, I had a couple of the iPhone photos enlarged on canvas wraps and they turned out pretty well. I guess getting a shot is better than no shot at all.
