Is the design of the 3.9/4.0/4.2/4.6 inherently bad?

The only ****ty ones were the 03ish disco blocks. catch em before they catch you and they're fine. I've seen many of these engines ran with no coolant, no oil and the owner thought they were totally ****ed. few hours of love and their rig was back on the road.

Hell. I used a rover to move across country, and have put almost 30K miles on it in the span of about 9-10 months. Reliability is ultimately what you make it. treat it like a japanese ****box and its going to treat you like a ****box.

That's what you get, if you maintain your car with good synthetic oil and the proper maintenance it deserves.

No, it isn't. That's the exception with the Rover V8, which is exactly why it's worthy of mention.

The Rover V8 can be built to be reliable, but it doesn't come that way.

And sometimes you get lucky and have a Rover engine go 400,000 miles. The odds are probably similar to winning the lottery. Doing regular maintenance on your lottery ticket, does not guarantee you will win.
