Is the MUTT required to bleed the brakes?

I need to replace the front brake hoses on my 2000 FG because they are too short. Wanted to go to steel braided for safety anyways. The Fuso repair manual says you need the MUTT to bleed the system due to the abs. Anyone know if this is true? I know on VW's the manual says it is required but in reality you can do it without.

Excellent question, I wonder the same about the 06.

I did bleed mine, manual said I had to remove a fuse. Brakes seem a touch spongy now though.

I am diving in with new brake lines.... if necessary I will take it to the dealer for final bleeding.

I am pretty sure that my FG84 does not have ABS.
This would imply that it has efficient brakes that require some form of mechanism to stop them from locking up. I wish I had that problem!

I don't know about the Fuso specifically, but many times you can solo bleed the brakes with the help of the ABS controller and appropriate hardware/software. You can still do it the old fashioned way without it.

We bled it manually without turning the key on-to avoid turning on the abs with air in the system. Haven't gone for a drive yet, but the pedal feels firm.

Owen don't forget that we all do not live in the tropics......... braking on snow or ice is when you will need that ABS! It would make sense that the trucks going down under aren't equipped with ABS, but are you sure yours does not have it?

The US trucks have ABS?? Wow. I'm 90% sure in aus the braking system is exactly the same as it was 25 years ago and hasn't had a single thought put into it since...

OK, no ABS, here are a couple of other items that you will not see on Oz trucks but may come as standard on N American trucks, in particular Canada: Heated mirrors. Block heater.

I see no reason for Oz trucks to have ABS, and really other than ice/snow covered roads there is no reason for that here, same brakes.......

I see a different approach to building campers in our different environments too, not only the Oz builders but some US builders, some of the obvious items off the top: Exterior water tanks, heating systems, less need for insulation??

The conclusion is that the MUTT is not needed if you don't turn on the key with air in the system. Just bleed them manually the old fashioned way.

My fuso is a little different, it has a back up electric motor that activates when you step on the brakes even with no key in.
