I drove my TJ from Alaska to Argentina, bone-stock.
If I were your friend, I would focus on interior living mods. Fridge, sleeping, food storage, cooking. etc.
These are the things you really want most when living out of a vehicle for months. The bumper that happens to be on the front is essentially irrelevant.
