Jeep Wrangler Habitat Official Release

Honu

lost on the mainland
curious about the no rack on it
I have seen the gobi rack that allows tilting it out of the way ? I was thinking the other night I wonder if you lengthened a gobi a touch and if it could tilt out of the way to allow this to work ?
if so could be a cool combo depending on what this thin weighs of course :) and how much left you could use the gobi for ?

or could the roof be tweaked to include rails of some kind ? cause being able to put kayaks or bikes on top would be a really cool option

Could hinge it so it flips to one side or the other, then toss a piece of shade material on top, insto-presto....shade awning.

That pic makes it look like the Habitat would clear the folded back Gobi.

The pain would be you have to take anything heavy off the rack before you can fold the rack back, and you'd have to leave it folded back like that the entire time the Habitat is "open".

Hmm.

I don't know if it's the Gobi rack or another company but, there is a rack on the market that flips all the way back and the rails on the basket move to become legs. It looks like a skeleton awning off the back of the Jeep. Through a tarp over it & you're set with a very heavy duty awning.

Yeah taking everything off would be a pain, but it is a solution to carry bicycles, boats etc...why I think if it flipped to the side and created an awning would be cool, make it multipurpose, as Captain K-man suggested as well.

What # has been delivered presuming that is something that can be shared publicly?

I think #4 just before OX12. The next two should be within a month after correcting some minor problem that I really don't know anything about. One problem after another....

Why not just get a RTT?

Not to knock the Habitat, but it isn't like a Dormobile, or a Flip-Pac, or an offering from Maltec where you can standup in it and cook, or whatever, with the Habitat have to crawl though a hole, to get the sleeping area.

I dunno, I was kinda disappointed that the whole interior isn't open, an just has a crawl hole, heck just might as well get a RTT...

Why not just get a RTT?

More sleeping area than RTT, more integration into the vehicle but maybe the most appealing is it has more exclusivity than RTT. Ownership of the habitat will be a rather small fraternity. The few that'll be rolling an AT Habitat are guaranteed 2-3 years of rock star status on ExPo and related "Overland Empire" gatherings. It's an overland aphrodisiac, board cred will spike. Face it, the price tag of a Habitat isn't that much more than a high end RTT, but the extras that couple of dollars gets you makes it a real bargain in this niche.

Some sort of lost...

The habitat is much more appealing than a RTT to me.
If you add up the price and weight of a quality tent, quality rack and hard top you probably wont be far off, however the price definitely is tough to swallow.
What you gain is a light, low profile option that offers a good amount of space, quick setup and access from the cab. Plus you can leave the whole setup on all the time without drawing too much attention. I know I don't want to have a big bulky rack with a 12" tall tent riding around all the time!
It would be nice to have everything behind the sound bar open to below for sure. It would give you some options for standing and cooking inside if a person was willing to remove part of the roll bar. On the other hand, as is you can sleep four up top, or sleep two and have lots of "floor" space for gear.
I couldn't care less about exclusivity though. To each his own I guess.

I'd love to have one of these but I wouldn't be interested in putting a deposit down until they iron out the details and get on some sort of real schedule with them.

This is my plan exactly.

I'll enlarge the "crawl" hole in the habitat to be the entire area behind the roll bar at the front seats (take out sound bar)
I'll modify the roll bar too, so the horizontal near the tailgate is right at the very top back of the roof.

I think that will make a good size "hole" for standing, cooking, etc.

The plan then would be to have sleeping for two up top (over the hood), and also have the cargo area (no backseat) transform into a flat surface for sleeping when it's not safe to use the habitat.

I think this will be an amazing setup. After many thousands of hours thinking about it, and seeing what others have done, I prefer this to a standard RTT.

I am thinking an Autohome RTT, rather than canvas version, sorry shoulda clarified.

I dunno, I was a little let down when I first saw it... (when I heard Toyota was doing a retro FJ40....at first I was like "hell yeah"...then they released the FJ Cruiser...and then I was like "oh no...." :Wow1:)

...and not having it all open for the interior...be a shame to start hacking on it, that should of been done from the factory. Seems like a pain in the keister...

As with everything, we all have different needs and desires...it certainly is cool, but it could be a little more...well that is if they build more. :ylsmoke:
