Jevy's humble M-416 build thread

Well today I ordered a 35" spare tire/rim. I think I'm going to make a tire carrier on the rear of the Jeep(non swing away) to carry the tire/rotopax carriers/hi lift jack. I'ld say that I'm at least a few weeks away from messing with anything due to my surgery. I keep reading all of the threads online about jeep and trailer rebuilds. I'm starting to get a better game plan of how I intend to do a few things.

I received the LED lights last week as well and I really think I am going to like them. I may go ahead and order the harbor freight tongue box since I could mess with it inside on a shop cloth.

I'm still debating a few items though:
1. I have two 2.5 rotopax water containers. I'm fairly certain I am going to mount them on one of the front panels in front of the wheel/fender
2. Debating on whether to have a fresh water tank/pump
3. I'm already planning on a 12v battery and a couple 12v outlets for charging cell phone etc but I am debating on the need for a power inverter
4. Debating how to have the tongue modified. At this point I think I will plan on extending it at least 30" but maybe 36"
5. I've also been looking into solar charger systems but I don't quite understand how well they will work and how many watts are needed to charge a battery
6. I also will have to move the two jacks on the passenger side towards the outside a little more to stabilize the trailer

We mounted two Rotopax 2.5 gallon water containers on the front passenger side of the trailer. The location seems to work for now. Here's a picture:

I have the 3 gal red ones on each side but was leary of putting doubles on each side due to weight on long bolt. How are yours holding up? Any issues? Thanks

That's exactly how I plan to mount my two water packs. I'm going to try to figure out how to mount one or two rotopax containers on my spare tire rack....the reason for the fuel on the back is because the fuel guage doesn't work so I am planning on carrying it just i case I "forget" when to top off. :)

Not sure how large the opening is for the side of the Rotopax, but if the diameter allowed, use tube and either weld a nut on the end or tap the tube for your T-bolt,t hat way the wieght is on square or round tube and not on threaded rod or a bolt, less chance to damage threads or break long bolts.

lol no problem.. Tomorrow is my 3 week follow up on my back. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can start back on the trailer after the first of the year. I have received the LED lights for tail lights and interior light. Already have the rotopax mounts as well. Hate to say it but once I can get back on the mend the Jeeps going to need the attention first. Debating on whether to replace the 350 or not.

Still debating on putting a couple leds lights along the bottom for lights at night while camping.

how to lengthen the lunette.

I also have ordered a matching spare because it will fit the Jeep as well. At this time I plan to mount the spare on the rear of the CJ. Hopefully what I have drawn out as a tire carrier will work.

also forgot to mention I purchased a 5lb propane tank to mount on the outside. Jury is still out on it. I may end up trying to go up to a 10lb if I think I can make it work.

Glad you are getting better. Must be tough to get the parts and have to just stare at them! Like you I have the spare on the jeep since the bolt pattern is the same.

I never could find a way to get a 10 lb propane on due to toolbox on the front area and highlift on the back.

I am going to buy LED strips for underneath and back for nighttime lighting.

How is the battery box plan coming?

Keep the 350. Parts are cheap and easy to find. Not like my AMC.

My doc report said I was doing great and I am where I should be. It sounds like at the very earliest he will let me get back to normal activities after 12 weeks so it will be quite a while until I can get back on the jeep or trailer. I'm going to line the stuff up and organize it so I can keep it straight. I have two 12 y/o boys so I think I may work "through" them by using them to do a few things for me. I've got several small items on the Jeep that I can get some help with/through my boys. I saw a thread on here about LED light strips but can't find it anymore. I'm going to spend some time to looking at LED trailer lights. I still haven't bought the tongue box but think I may take my kids this weekend and pick one up at harbor freight.

I definitely am keeping the 350 platform but I don't know really what kind of shape it is in. I have a build thread on Jeepforum about the build. I bought it online and the Jeep was NOWHERE near as good of a shape as advertised(meaning that I got SERIOUSLY screwed). I had to get a mechanic buddy of mine that helped me with some brake/carb work. He heard a "tick" in the motor that he thinks is either a lifter going bad or possibly a worn cam lobe. He basically told me that if I intend on doing anything to the engine internally then I would be better off with replacing/rebuilding the engine. He quoted me ~$3k to remove and install a new engine. Jeggs has new crate engines for $1500 so I may try to do the swap myself even though I'm a little worried about doing it myself. I've worked on motorcycle engines and stuff but never a car engine. Things like setting up the distributor for timing and connecting the th400 trans and dana 20 transfer case back to the engine correctly is also a concern. Also wondering if I should just go ahead and rebuild trans while it out(even though it works fine now) and change the seals on the transfer case since I'm going to be about that deep into anyway. Sorry this is so off topic but basically it just boils down to the fact that I have two pretty large projects that I was hoping to have pretty much done by the end of the winter. I doubt I'll make that deadline but as long as I keep it so I can still use it and work on the smaller projects to keep them where I can still use it somewhat over the spring/summer. That's because right now I don't have a way to tow my trailer other than the Jeep.

Sorry to be so rambling.

I am with you on this rebuild. I am trying to get my old 79 CJ in good enough shape to drive it to OX13 in May outside of Flagstaff. Right now I am on my second tranny build (don't ask!)and as soon as it is finished I am going to make a few short (4 hrs or less) trips to test the Jeep out. Between the Jeep and the trailer, my Jeep tagline has a whole new meaning!!!!

With all that said I still love working on both projects but I am slow.

Keep us posted on your recovery and your build.

I'm usually one of those guys that when I start a project I go all in and get it done. I know lots of people on here have taken sometimes years to rebuild a Jeep. I honestly wish I had the patience but usually when I start a job I work real hard to get it done and done right. For now I'm skipping a few things that can wait until maybe next fall like the wiring harness and hopefully the engine.

so today I got a few things ordered:
the harbor freight front box
an optima battery box holder from a vendor on jeep forum for the trailers battery
trailer wiring kit

I'm now debating on how I am planning to wire the various items I plan to use. I need to sit down and draw out a wiring diagram to determine how many circuits my control panel would need. I know there is a way to make the car charge the battery while on the road. For now I'm going to skip this part. I am planning to install a new wiring harness next winter in my Jeep so when it comes down to that I will check into making it charge on the road at the re-wiring time.

So now my focus will turn to getting a wiring diagram put together a material list for the various lights/power and get it ordered.

Other areas still not addressed:
1 generator mount method (still researching)
2 believe it or not but I've left the servicing the axle to almost the end of this project. I've never messed with wheel bearings and seals so I gotta admit I'm a little intimidated about it. So I need to figure out what items I need and get them ordered as well.
3.trying to determine whether to fool around with a water tank and pump. At this point I think I'm going to be bringing water in rotopax carriers and any additional water needed will be filtered using a gravity feed pump. I have a burner hot water shower set up so I don't see the need for me to go to the trouble/expense for pressurized water on board
4. I still haven't found a set of latches that I like. I guess I'm just being too picky but I don't really know how long strong of a lever is needed. I probably need to just go to an old fashioned hardware store to see if I can find someone to help me figure out what I need.
5. I REALLY want an ARB fridge but I don't know that I can bring myself to do it cost wise. I'm going to have to get way closer to finished before I can make the decision on that one. I really hate the idea of me having to lug a cooler in/out of the travel due to it's height. On the other hand to mount an ARB fridge the way I would want it would be a serious project to install the way I have it in my mind.

That's about it for now. I'm probably going to start thinking about the wiring tomorrow. If anyone has any thoughts suggestions then I would appreciate it.

today I got the optima battery ordered *GULP* man those things are expensive. That's about all I had time to do today.

ok received the harbor freight tongue box and the bezerk high lift jack holder and rotopax holder for my spare tire carrier that I plan to build. I also got the spare picked up from 4 wheel parts and have it at the house now. Out of frustration my wife and I put the cover on my tent. When I hit the driveway I was carried straight to the hospital. My dad who literally had no idea how to use a tent but he put it up as best he could. lol. Putting that cover on for the first time was a pretty big pita not to mention we had kayaks galore to crawl around. Threading the seam into the channel took us a while to figure it all out. My back is starting to feel great and it is very frustrating for me to see what kind of work I have coming up and not being able to do anything.

received the optima battery and the battery cradle made for it by a vendor on jeep forum. I'm getting a pretty good list of stuff left to order for the electrical components on the trailer so I should be able to rock on with that stuff pretty soon. My sons are looking to make some extra xmas $$$$ so I think I'm going to let them do the wiring while I basically sit around and watch/direct. I honestly don't know if I'm make the right decision on installing the tongue box at this point because I think it will be difficult to between it and the trailer when time comes. I may more or less put the tongue box together on the workbench and not mount it until the paint is done.

I'm going crazy in the house so getting a few things done by my boys will probably tone down my cabin fever a bit. I also finally found a set of latches that I really liked so I'm hoping to get them maybe Friday/Saturday. I'm very interested to see how much or little effort it will take to open/close the top with the tent mounted.
