JK Cabin Noise Reduction and Heat Protection

Jeep Wrangler often receives Consumer Reports low ratings with complains about noise. Inside JK's cabin a wind noise becomes very loud at highway speeds even with freedom hardtop. Personally, I love my JK and I do not care about Consumer Reports ratings. Last year I expected long driving days and traveling on the desert dirt roads, all that in the middle of summer, this is why, I needed some heat protection and driving comfort improvements.

The first step was to install headliners on the freedom hardtop. I purchased Hothead Headliner Kit. Velcro adhesive tapes are easy to work with and installation was quick. All panels fit perfectly.

The second step is to insulate the floor. Inspired by this post www.jeepforum.com/forum/f96/insulate-floor-jk-1027199/ I purchased five rolls of self-adhesive Heat and Sound Suppressor Thermo-Tec #14620. This product contains two layers and was designed as heat and acoustical protection mat.

I started with the floor first by taking all floor mats out. It is extremely simple task in Jeep Wrangler. No tools are required and all the seats can stay in place. It is like that by design and makes cleaning up interior easy when water or mud gets into Jeep's cabin while exploring the backcountry.

Thermo-Tec mat can be easily cut with scissors. I used old paper folders to get idea about a size and shape of individual pieces to be attached to the floor. After affixing insulation to the metal surface I cut holes in Thermo-Tec mat around rubber plugs that are used to let water to run out in case the floor is flooded. It might be needed after water crossing for example.

The last step was adding insulation inside the doors. I removed door panels and attached heat and sound suppressor mat inside the doors. After completing this task I noticed that metal bucket echo is no longer present when front doors are being shut. I love that improvement.

After our trip last summer, it is still hard to say how much floor insulation helped to reduce the cabin temperature. The headliners also played a vital role in heat reduction. One thing is certain: driving comfort has increased a lot. JK is very quiet inside while driving.

I'm thinking about doing this too, but I can see that liner getting ruined by mud and water pretty fast with some of the wheeling I do.

5 rolls of Thermo-Tec 14620 60" X 36" Heat and Sound Suppressor was $223 plus Hothead Headliners $342.

Did this to my JK a while in stages (sound dampening mats first, then headliners). The difference is night and day. Took my father on the freeway the other day doing 82MPH and he said it is quieter than his truck. He we thoroughly impressed. Great for Arizona summer heat too.

Hmmm. I should let consumer reports drive my Cummins 4bt powered Jeep M715 or my 52 M-38 with a Ford small block and dual blown out glass packs before testing a new Jeep and see if their report would be different.

How does the thermotec hold up in open topped vehicles exposed to the elements? I have thought about putting some in my 715.

Thermo-Tec mat holds well to any metal surface. You may consider some other products from this brand in case your M715 requires heat barrier for example.

Thanks for the great write-up and pics. I'll be doing this for sure.

Do you have an estimate of how much weight you added with the Thermo-Tec?

Thanks,
-Dan

I like your headliner color choice. My 2013 JKUR is already a black hole inside with all the black upholstery. I don't need a black roof also.

Can you tell me what color that is exactly?

I also like the idea of insulating the floor, though I would probably start out with just the front seating area, since it's usually just the wife and me.

Thanks for the report.
