JK tire carriers- Tera-flex vs AEV?

Take sec and look up Expedition One. My father has front and rear on his 09 JK, I have rear on my 98 TJ, and I have front (rear carrier should be delivered tomorrow) on my 13 JKUR. Bonus is Northridge 4x4 sells them too and they had the rear in stock ready to ship. I'm not knocking either of the aforementioned products as they would be my other choices also but I am more than pleased with quality with what I have.

I know that the reason for the AEV to be uncentered is to allow 37 inch tire to clear access to the tailgate handle.... With this said, since a lot of people have a problem with the looks of the uncentered tires, I don't see why AEV have yet to come up with a bracket similar to the spare tire relocators to center a 33 or 35 inch tire with their carriers..... Seems obvious to me...

Just do what I do, fill the back with a cargo rack and stop looking out the back! LOL!

I talked to morryde and they gave me a company to use... however it's been over two weeks and after responding to the first email I've never heard back from them. Will probably just end up dealing directly with MorRyde (which is what I had to do with the hinges last summer). I'm more than fine with supporting a company directly that's making these awesome parts in North America. Also just ordered the Titan Tank from Northridge.

I have the same problem but with Morryde. Sent them a mail 3 weeks ago and a second mail 2 weeks ago. Didn't get an answer.
Sent a third yesterday.
Maybe I'll just have to look for one of those shipping warehouses for international shipping and deal with retrofit.

Have you contacted Ryan at MORryde? I'm told that you can contact him (ryan.wertz@morryde.com) and he can ship to you directly. I know they've shipped to international customers before because international customers have posted in other forums.

I also just came across a vendor now carrying MORryde Jeep products that's selling on eBay and they also have a web store. They seem to have priced a few of the MORryde products a bit higher than other outlets, but the price includes shipping. Not sure if that offer includes international shipping.

One other large vendor of MORryde's offers free shipping on orders over $75, but I don't think that applies to international shipping, and they don't offer the entire MORryde product line (I've heard they are likely to soon).

And there's Retrofit Offroad as you mentioned, I don't know if they ship internationally.

That's about all I know, I hope it helps.

I don't know if MORryde watches this forum, so I sent Ryan an email for you. He responded right away, here's what he said...

On the other one that has had trouble getting ahold of Morryde, the only issue I have had is with someone from Switzerland. Not sure if that is the same person. But I keep trying to send them emails and they keep getting kicked back to me. Maybe their spam filter is too tight?? I'll keep trying.

Edit: This morning I also checked with Retrofit Offroad about their email responsiveness (and about international shipping), here's what they said:

I don't think I have missed any emails from people but it is possible that I have over the past two weeks. I have had several people contact me about international shipping which I have not been set up to do. I have a new updated account with UPS and I should be able to start shipping internationally easier now. If you want to give them my email address (joel@retrofitoffroad.com) to contact I can help them on international orders

Thanks for your help, Jeff. :bigok:

Don't know why I didn't receive Ryan's mails. They weren't in my spam folder either.
Well, I just called Morryde and left my number so Ryan can call me back. :)

By the time I was in contact with Retrofit Offroad they weren't able to offer international shipping, but Joel did answer my mail within a day.

I have a 2015 Rubicon Hard Rock edition. The rear bumper has a hole in it from the factory to fit the AEV carrier. The factory bumper has a cut out for the spare, and with the AEV carrier moving the tire to the passenger side it would seriously mess with my OCD!! I decided to install the Teraflex carrier to keep the spare centered on the factory bumper cutout. The teraflex carrier is stout and I'm happy with it for the most part. My only complaint is that it doesn't allow the tailgate to open as far as it did with the stock tailgate hinges installed. I have the AT combo slide, stove / fridge mount, on the driver side and a tailgate table. There isn't much room between the open tailgate table and the slide when its out now. I'd like the ability to carry extra gas, but a 2-3 gallon Rotopax wont get you very far.

Replacing the Teraflex carrier with the AEV carrier is on my list now. If I'm going to carry extra fuel, I might as well cary enough to actually get me somewhere! And putting the factory tailgate hinges back on will give me some extra space between my tailgate table and stove/fridge.

Matt, I'm thinking something similar (replacing my TeraFlex carrier with the AEV carrier - I also have a 2015 Hard Rock). I wish I had gone with the AEV carrier in the first place, for the fuel caddy mainly. One thing I'm not super happy with is that TeraFlex won't give me a "safe operating weight tolerance" that their carrier will support, whereas AEV comes out with it when asked.

Did you go through with the replacement?

Dennis from TeraFlex and I have been in email communication and he said that TeraFlex is currently testing the Titan tank with their carrier. I have followed up with him and he's, in turn, following up to see if the tests were performed and how they went.

Dennis said that as long as the tire could be snugged up against the tank and the tank up against the hinge so that there is NO movement (which would translate into metal fatigue on the adjustable spare mount), then there shouldn't be an issue. When Dennis gets back to me, I'll post an update.

There's actually a design reason why it's not centered: to allow for easy clearance to the handle on the tailgate with up to a 40" tire.

I have the TeraFlex hinge and there's plenty of room with my stock Rubi tire on the back, and I know there's enough room with a 35" tire, but a 37" tire gets kind of cramped (still just enough room), but with a 40" tire, the handle would be severely encroached upon. AEV's off-centered design allows for plenty of room around the tailgate handle at all tire sizes.

It's funny to me that people are so caught up with the tires being centered on the back when classic rigs like the Land Rover Defender, and even previous Wranglers like the TJ and the YJ came with off-center spares on the back.

The titan tank should work with the teraflex setup no issue. I am going to be running one this year on my stock carrier. As long as it snugs up against my tire bumpers, there will be no movement.

If you take a few seconds and re-read my post that you quoted, you will realize that I say exactly what you are saying about it being offset to clear the door handle in the first couple of sentences.

With this said, people make a fuss for a reason I believe. You are right that a few other models have offset rear spare tires, but if you are going to make it offset, make it offset enough so that it looks to have been done purposely, rather than look like you failed to center it.

Wow. My bad. Missed that whole first sentence. Long day at work staring at the computer, must have gone cross-eyed. :)

That said, given the design choice, I absolutely see why AEV has chosen *not* to release a "centering bracket" - If I were AEV, I wouldn't either. Wouldn't be hard for someone that was that bothered by it to rig up their own, or choose a different carrier altogether.

However, in my opinion, the AEV carrier looks more intentionally offset than the stock spare setups on YJs, TJs, and Land Rovers do; those look like someone used the wrong end of the tape measure. Just my opinion.

I see what you are saying... However, I had a TJ for 8 years and never realized that the spare was uncentered!!!! Wow..

On the other hand, I find that it was a bad business decision to build it like that, since I am certain that there is a lot more people that do not buy it because they are bothered buy the fact that it is not centered, than there are guys that will run 40 inch spare tires.
