Well, after having 285/75R16's on for a while, a short while, I decided I did not like the wider tire and little extra resistance on the steering.

I purchased Toyo Open Country M/T's, 255/85R16's last week and initially I really like them. The steering is more responsive, I like the tall narrow look on my truck. I gained almost 3/4 inches over the 285's in height. That dropped me down a couple of hundred RPM at 60 mph over the previous tires. Overall, I am pleased. They weight in about the same as the 285's. I just got back from a 300 road trip and they are very good on the highway. It rained pretty heavily, and they did fine. I did have them siped. Not much in the way of increased road noise. I know they are there, but it's really nothing.

A few quicky pics.

Beautiful Truck!!

I really want to try the 255/85/16's on my Jeep JK, but I just can't make up my mind on whether they will be to small. In my mind the 35" tire fits the proportions of the JK better. Unfortunately I can't find a skinny 35/36" tire that fits on a 16" rim.

the Interco SSR Radial comes in 35x10.50-16, possibly the ultimate expo size for the vehicle that still likes to get down and dirty.

$300/ea+ though...

Those look really nice. And I thought the Toyos were expensive. What type of wear do you think you will get out of them?

Where'd you find the Toyos? I tried to get them all over and nobody could find any. The CSR at Toyo said they were on "galactic back-order".
I ordered BFG KM2s in 255/85-16 and should have them on by the weekend. $186 each from Discount Tire.

I had been thinking about trying them for some time. I was in the local Les Schwab having tires done on my wife's Subaru. The manager is a friend of mine and I just happened to ask if they had any of the Toyo M/T's in 255. They had just gotten four in. Done deal. Now I need to get a spare, but I didn't ask him yet, so I don't know if there is a major backorder or not.

David, the Toyo 255 MT's look great on your rig!
With siping on these tires they seem to do pretty well in the rain and snow.
Are you running stock gears or planning a gear swap in the future?

Toyo Open Country MT tires have been very popular here in the PacNW for a several years now (thru Les Schwab Tires), which may explain better availability in this region (?)

Wow, those look great. Thanks so much for posting pics. I am planning on ordering some of these this week and I was concerned that they would look too thin. But I think they look perfect on your rig.

I have the BFG AT's in a 295/75/16 right now and I want a more aggressive tire that is also narrower for less rolling resistance. I think this will be the perfect size as the BFG's measure about 11.2" wide and 33.2" tall and the Toyo's in a 255/85 are 10.2" wide and 33.5" tall.

Curious what you paid. The toyo dealer in town quoted $340 a piece mounted, and my buddy at the off-road shop said he could get them to me for $230 a piece (amazing price difference).

Thanks, I think they look good on the truck too.

I'm running 4.56's now, I think it's perfect.

There are so many rigs around here with them on, especially full-size, that I once thought they were kind of the bling thing to do. However, after talking with people, they really are a good tire.

It could be that the popularity is one of the problems Hilldweller is running into.

Whoa!!!!! $340.00

What a price.

Well, at $230 apiece that is a good price for these. Does that include mounting and balancing? I paid $261 out the door, including the siping. However, I sold my Duratracs for $800. That helped a long way going towards the Toyos.

I got my toyo's at les shwab. 31x10.5 for 180 mounted/ balanced. had the idler and pitman pretty well messed up with no shake. realized the tires were wearing hard on the inside fronts. fixed idler and pitman and rotated tires. still a little rough but starting to even out a little. My next set might be the 255's just need another inch to really make them work on the 4runner

i have 32x11.50-16 SSRs on my nissan, and they wear like steel. i have about 30k on them already, with still plenty of usable tread remaining. they have a pretty good howl, but with 10oz of copper BBs, they ride like butter.

Beautiful truck Dave, I love it. Hope the new tires treat you well I know I was flat out GIDDY when I got the 33/10.50's on my 4Runner. I'd be stoked to get up every morning and see that truck waiting for me ;)

I too LOVE those 35/10.50 SSR's too though, but WHEW what a price on both tires...

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the compliment. By the way, your 4Runner is pretty awesome in itself. I've been following your build.

I'm really looking forward to getting out on trail this summer. The old truck is just about where I want it now. A new rear bumper would be pretty good though!
