JSimmons' 4th Gen 4Runner Build

Hello all,

FYI - I posted an identical build thread at Toyota120.com.

Well, this has been a long time coming. I finally completed my suspension install and got some new shoes this past weekend. I installed the OME suspension with 885/895 springs and their new Nitrocharger Sport shocks. Is it stiffer than stock? Yes. Is it unbearable? Not in my opinion. I had an OME suspension on my old Wrangler TJ and for the money I thought it was the best riding suspension you could get. So far, I feel the same way for the 4Runner. Although, I understand that many of you do much more extreme off-roading and much more often than I do. Anyhow...

For tires, I went with Goodyear Silent Armors in P255/75 R17 on stock SR5 rims. Why p-rated? Well, like most people here I am on-pavement 99% of my time. I did not want the harshness of an E load range tire, and even though I did consider C load range tires, I could not find anything that I thought was an acceptable size at an acceptable price. Also, I made a trade-off for the taller sidewall but lower weight of the p-rated tire (44lbs. vs. 53 lbs. for the GYSA in 265/70 E load range). Ergo, for 4 GYSAs from Sam's Club I was out the door for $950. I simply cannot believe how the price of tires has sky-rocketed in the past couple of years...

Despite the 255/75 R17 size (32") I was rubbing on the fender liners which I think is due to the Firestone alignment. I'll track down the alignment specs I've seen on the forums here and take them in to make sure everything is good to go (I'm going to put that lifetime alignment to use). I have already pushed the liners forward but still just barely rub going in reverse at full-lock. In the past day of driving, according to the OBC I've suffered about a 1.5 mpg loss during city driving.

Yes, yes...photos or it doesn't exist. They're crappy cell phone photos...

Up on the rack.

Checking account deletion equipment.

Rear sway-bar end-links from Chris North (Badmotorfinger on Toyota120.com). Beefy stuff and smooth install.

Approximate rear post-lift clearance measured from the hub to the fender edge.

Post-lift side shot. The wife insists that the running boards stay for use as her step until sliders are installed.

Post-lift passenger side quarter shot.

Well, that was a weekend of fun and unforeseen stupidity. Much beer was consumed during post-lift activities.

I would like to thank Bulldog, PhotoG and Joel (all at Toyota120.com) for their write-ups that were posted on Toyota120.com. Also, the discussion on "Skinny Tires" ( http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/73441-quot-Skinny-quot-Tires?highlight=%27skinny%27 ) on this site helped me to determine which shoes to go for, Martinjumper contributed a lot to that initial discussion. I used all of these sources of information along with the FSM to guide my way through this little project. All were very helpful.

The Army is moving me out to Arizona this Summer, so perhaps I'll run into a few fellow 4Runner aficionados out there on the trails. :wavey:

Thanks! Been lurking here for quite some time ever since I had my 1st Gen 4Runner but never really had the means to do a build. Now I've just got to get out on the trails more often.
