Got it all put back together and it fires up great, but the front fuel injector on the drivers side bank is leaking... ugh. Now I gotta take the plenum off again and re-situate the fuel rail. I was really looking forward to driving around in my new rig!

So I replaced the fuel injector o rings and put it all back together, hopefully for the last time in a while. Its purring like a kitten now. Seriously. It sounds amazing! However, I have noticed that when it is in drive and I am stopped, it is idling veeery low. Like 200-250 rpm low. Idles fine when in park or neutral. Anyone know what would cause this? I don't think its a vacuum leak, as it idles fine when not in gear. I really hope its not the IAC valve. Those things are expensive...

It could be the bcm needs to relearn the idle. It happens to me everytime I unhook my battery and is the one and only thing that I dislike about my monty. Mitsu has a relearn procedure but it hasnt always worked for me, all else fails I drive it around for a little while and it works it self out. One thing I have learned while doing is to have all the accessories off until it relearns itself.

Thank you! I didnt drive it much last night (maybe less than a mile) but did let it idle in park for maybe 20-30 minutes to make sure everything was in working order. I'll drive it around for a bit to try to get it to relearn the idle, but I need to take it to emissions and get new tags on it. They expired 4 days ago. Can I take it to emissions right off the bat aftef a head gasket change?

In California, if they hook it up and if it isn't in "ready" mode it will fail. The ECU has to go through all its' protocols so you don't just disconnect the battery to clear a check engine light and drive directly to the SMOG station.

So it seems to be running ok. I'm getting kinda paranoid about what it sounds like, since I pretty much tore it apart as soon as I bought it, and didn't get used to the sound. i feel like I am hearing an exhaust leak, but it sounds like it is coming from the center of the block between the heads... it also sounds like my valves are ticking, and I tried the rev to 3k gradually over 15 seconds, release, and repeat method already...I'm going to try to post a video tomorrow of it running and it would be greatly appreciated if you guys could reassure me that I don't need to tear it apart again!

You followed me, so now we're both lost
May want to check the vacuum lines for leaks. Also most Mitsubishi engines tend to be louder with ticking noises.

I have the same kind of low idle thing with my '03 (but the 3.8L engine). It was so bad that the car would sometimes die if I had the AC on (it was hit or miss). This last week my Mass Airflow Sensor died. After replacing the MAF today (with one from the scrap yard), it seems to idle better and more stably.

So I finally pulled off the driver's side rear camshaft cover in order to RTV it since I messed up and put an o-ring on it. Turns out one of the wings is cracked all the way across, and has put a small hole on the inside of it. Anyone know the part number for it, or where to get one? If someone has an extra, Ill pay to have it expedited up here to washington. Need the truck running so I can get to work. 2 of the 3 dealers parts departments ive called aren't open, and the other can only find the passenger side without the cam sensor mounting point.

Update:

So i had ordered the new driver's side camshaft seal from a local dealer, but it wouldn't come in for almost two weeks. In the meantime, since I needed to get to work, I JB welded the crap out of the old one. When the new one came in, I hadn't had any leaks or problems with the old one so I have left it on. Next time I need to do the timing belt or something I will take the old one off. That thing is a HUGE pain in the *** to get on and off. Took about a hour each way due to the maybe .5mm of clearance there is back there, if that. It has to be twisted in just the right way. FYI for anyone with a 2001 like me, our trucks are special, and have the camshaft sensor on that rear cam cover. O-rings are not supposed to be on it, just silicone. Stupid, stupid design...

Also, got new tires for the truck a couple weeks ago, and changed all the brake pads last week as well. Installed a hitch the other week, which was an adcevture all in itself. I ended up cross threading one of the weldnuts in the frame, and had to rent a tap and die set from autozone. Ended up managing to get it correctly re-threaded, and the lcoktite'ed the crap out of the bolt. Now i just need to wire up the trailer light harness. Its probably due for another oil change as well, in addition to diff fluids (which I should have just done when i bought it, o well.)
