kayak/tent trailer

After a few builds, I thought of something I really need (lol) A kayak trailer with tent. All my other builds , I had the kayak in mind but I wanted something totally different this time, and every time I get the itch to build something, I think what I would change or build different, so after searching the web, I think I found something that may suit my needs.. This trailer started life as an old 17' boat trailer..

My plan is to make it fit a 12' Hobie Pro Angler first, then build a "cage " around it for a roof top tent or another kayak, but yet make enough storage to make it a comfortable camping trailer at the same time.

I cut the tongue down as far as i could then I used some of the old hardware to put 2 - 4" PVC for the kayak to ride on, I didn't get any pics of that.

I did upgrade the wheels to 12' and I used 1 1/2" square tubing for the frame, not to mention the couple pieces of Trek board on each side of the kayak.

A lot of times those boat trailers look big, but the axles are weak and light-duty. Upgrading axles is cheap insurance.

That’s what I was thinking, I noticed it was a good bit smaller diameter wise than I would like, although I’m sure because I saw it ,that the 17’ V bottom boat that lived on it would weigh more than what I got going on now, plus there’s another reason and I’ll get to that later in this story..

After much research to find out what's out there in terms of fishing kayak trailers. I decided to add a couple under body truck boxes 42" long and a couple rod holders.. I think I got the kayak part where I want it.. Pics To Follow

Well got it about wrapped up,I got it basically the way I wanted. I agree with rnArmy that I should put a bigger axle. My thought was that with a single tepui a 12' kayak and camping gear,it still wasn't coming close to the weight of the 17' fiberglass boat that it had on it, BUT probably the main reason was that , I'm not sure I'm keeping it. I had back surgery last April and although everything went well,I'm not so sure about climbing in and out of the tent. It basically sits as high as if I put it on my truck rack and I'm old and don't want things that high any more. I saw a post inthe Classified for a YAK trailer and thought it was perfect ,it's designed for a quad but what if it had Kayak racks instead? I would have grabbed it in a minute if it wasn't in California and I'm in WV. so I'm making one now. I know there's no perfect camper, so either tents up high or the kayak is..
