Keg as water tank?

I have come into possesion of a traditional Sanke beer keg. I was originally going to make a bachelor pad end table out of it, or cut it in half and make a grill, and then it occurred to me that why couldn't it be cleaned throughly and then re-used as a portable water tank I could store in my trailer? Any reason why this wouldn't work? Share your thoughts...

I think it is a fun idea and think you could get pressurized water out of it if you use the pump.

just bought 2 myself, 1 pony key and 1 full size, I plan on making my pony for fire pit/ grille and dont know what to do with other one. They of course are built like tanks, stainless on outside and another layer of aluminum on inside.

have fun with it

They seem a little heavy to be using as a container to be transporting around. I think there would be lighter materials than stainless steel for transporting water. But If it works, let us know how it goes. You could put a Sanke connection on top and use compressed air or CO2 to move the water out of the container, but a pain to clean...

I was thinking about using compressed air to get pressurized water. Your point about cleaning is a good one though, and also a pain to refill with water.

If the keg was being used purely for water how often do you think it would need to be cleaned? Obviously for beer it gets cleaned every refill.

I think it would have to be cleaned somehow every other fill? depends how long the old water was in it as well? kinda like the water in my camelback gets pretty ruff after it is in there for awhile? the ones I bought had the tops cut out of them and they were used for boiling peanuts.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
you could also carbonate it easily which is fun. In college we created all sorts of fun concoctions by adding carbonation via a 5 gal beer keg :)

I think the end table idea is much better, or as a BBQ. The shape of the thing is a bummer, as it wastes a lot of space around it, unlike a square tank. Also, it's hard getting water in and out, and if you want to add fittings, e.g. vent line, you have to weld (can you weld to such a tank?). With some of the plastic tanks, you just drill a hole and use ABS pipe cement from the hardware store.

I agree with the end table idea and or the BBQ. I think to hard to fill and would need to be cleaned out often.

Other than the odd shape it should work well. A shop could easily weld in a clean out or any kind of fitting you might need. Pound for pound it would probably be lighter than the heavy plastic RV tanks.

In my experience water holding tanks stay fairly clean. Just add a cup of bleach at the end of the season fill the tank and drain it. I've never seen an RV water tank that had a clean out.

I have never seen it done first hand however you can cut a keg in half.First layer foil on the ground and then you put a wire grate on the ground to lift a turkey or other item off the ground. From here you put the keg over the bird and seal it. From here it is similar to a dutch over type procedure by stacking coals around and on top of the keg. My father in law has seen this at some nascar thing he went to and he said it was an extremely moist bird that cooked pretty fast and even.

A few years ago I went on my first and only quail hunt with a few folks. One of them had a keg that he could pressurize and had a spigot on it. Think he either used a hand pump or a small compressor. I remember it worked well and had decent pressure. He said he had some strange stares as it was in front of his house for a little while, apparently it's not common for Mormons to have kegs or something.
