Kelly Kettle vs. JetBoil vs. Other Small Stoves: OJ->Real World

The Dragonfly was a life saver on this trip.

We had to leave the vehicle overnight, and only took the basics. Since the DF is MUCH smaller than our coleman, and we forgot the propane at the vehicle, we used the DF in the morning for breakfast, coffee, tea and hot water for washing our faces.

This stove is a great buy.

Optimus Nova / Nova+ Recall

Instead of starting a new thread, figured I'd revive a really old one to keep down the Expo clutter...

Heads up to those of you with an Optimus Nova/Nova+ stove:
As a result of reports of fuel leakage from a damaged fuel line or O-ring, Katadyn North America is recalling some Optimus Nova and Nova+ multi fuel stoves and some spare parts kits. See the CPSC Press Release for additional information or review the FAQs. If you bought your stove between January 2009 and September 2010 and it has a black burner housing and shows a QA-number from QA000011-QA007313, please fill in the form below to register for this recall. The QA-number of the stove is located on the side of the black burner housing. Nova and Nova+ stoves with silver burner housing have no QA-number and are not affected. If you have questions, please contact Katadyn/Optimus Customer Service 800 755 6701 (extension #3).
Here's a link to register for the recall:

I got the Nova+ at REI a couple years ago, and while it's still in perfect shape I'm debating returning it to get a MSR dragonfly. I think the Dragonfly may fit in a 1L pot better but I'm still not sure. Plus I really like MSR's products, especially being made in Seattle (like me!). Anyone have experience with BOTH stoves, care to tell me which they'd prefer? Mine's the Nova+ and I don't mind the sound of a jet engine coming from my stove

Still using the Svea 123 stove I bought new 40 years ago. It is the Land Cruiser, the Energizer Bunny of stoves. It has never failed me, in any temperature, at any altitude, never once has it ever failed to light and produce gobs of heat. One moving part. It has never been cleaned (never needed it). I've tried other stoves, but the trusty Svea is the one I reach for first every time. It will even work with JetBoil cups, if you're careful with the flame. Other stoves come and go; my little brass Svea will outlast them all and my grandchildren will still be using it to make oatmeal or cracked wheat in the morning with its comforting jet engine sound effect. :)

Funny that this thread was brought up again; I just purchased a Kelly Kettle from another member here.

For the past several years I've been using my Primus EtaPower stove as my main water heater, and small meal maker. I can have a griddle on the coleman cooking bacon and eggs in the morning, and use the Primus to boil water for coffee.

I used a Dragonfly for a bit as a back-up, but the Primu proves more useful for me.

I was also given a very old Optimus 8R stove that I keep as an emergency stove and for decoration. Fun and all, but not too useful for a family of four.

Maybe in a few years I'll report back on the KK.

I know this is an old thread but I've used an MSR Pocket Rocket for a number of years. I bought it specifically to heat water for coffee, tea, and instant grub. No complaints whatsoever and very small. If you're some sort of chef you might have different needs. I just want to boil water fast.

Optimus 111, and I carry a second burner system (5 minute job to switch to diesel/kerosene/jet B etc) Other than a few pump leathers over the years it works great. 2 of them and spare parts kit still takes less space than the old Coleman 2-burner white gas stove I also have and is easier to pack as smaller

We LOVE our MSR Reactor for boiling water. We use a larger stove for meals but for hot water for coffee/tea/oatmeal in the morning without pulling out the full kitchen it's great.

I've used many of the MSR stove. while dependable, they will not simmer and stay on. The Nova is the best stove I have used. Always works, simmers great, and you can hear when someone is using your stove.

Have you tried the newer pump MSR offers that says it will simmer?

Does that come with the rebuild kit or as a separate part?

I think it's separate and retails for around $30 or at least it used to. My wife bought me one for Christmas some time ago but I have yet to use it (no camping that required the light weight stove).

MSR Pocket Rocket is very versatile and can heat small pots easily.

X's 2 on the pocket rocket...I am not a nut over stoves, but this little stove has never failed me and is very compact...if you plan right according to the type of trip you are taking and then you bring the required amount of fuel canister's. Cheap, compact, easy to use, easy to put away. Works for me.

I love the MSR pocket rocket for quick cups of coffee or Mountain House meals on while backpacking or on canoe trips. The only reason I got rid of it was because of the isobutane canisters.

Word to the wise: be careful how you refer to the "Pocket Rocket" in mixed company. Apparently there's a sex toy out there with the same name...learned that from an awkward misunderstanding :sombrero:

Yessss, the mini mixer with infomercials called the magic bullet also has an evil twin on the net.... Don't ask me how I know.

Me "I love my magic bullet, we use it for everything"
Guest "Oh, use it alot do you?"
Me "yes at least 7-10 times a week"
Guest "Gosh, you sure your married?"
Me " what does that have to do with food preparation?"
