Great report and adventure. Thanks for sharing.
Are there other notable campgrounds along the way, or did you just camp at the point?
Scott, there are no established campgrounds except Toroweep. All others are "find a nice spot and camp". It goes without saying that one uses already existing fire rings though. For a long winded answer, here goes.
Twin Points: There is a great camp site at Oak Grove, actually if I recall it is a listed campground. Just fire rings, dry camping. Then on the way out to Twin Points, one wanders thru pines and scrub oaks - pick your spot?
Kelly Point: Between the lava road sections, nice trees and places to camp, again just pull off.
Then between Kelly Point and Whitmore, you head into the Poverty mountain area, again with tree coverage and camp spots. If I remember right, we were passing thru and thought, "what a great camp area", thinking there was more ahead. Not true - when you get to that point, if it's later in the day, stay there. But once you leave the trees, you're in the open to the Bar 10 and Whitmore. Not much protection if the wind is blowing.
Going north from the Bar 10 and over to Toroweep, you get into the Trumbell mountain area, lots of big pines and beautiful. Great camping areas.
Toroweep to SB and Kanab points, small trees and I can't remember any notable camp areas. Not that there isn't any.
Hopes this help others reading this. Do the complete western A. S., it's incredible.
