It's been quite a few years since the last time I've done the Mojave Road. Not only had it been too long, but I've never experienced the trail proper. Always felt a rush to complete it, often driving by the points of interest and going by what I've heard from others. Didn't help that the vehicle used was built more around going fast then cruising. So with summer not far off and wanting to get another trip in, I got to planning and gathered any history I could find. In my quest for understanding what the Mojave Road truly was, I ended up purchasing The Mojave Road Guide by Dennis Casebier, not so much for the directions, but for the work he put into researching the past. The facts, stories and pictures were amazing and gave some great insight to further my research. In the end I took what info I wanted to share and printing customized copies so everyone in our group could see the pictures and learn as we drove through the historical trail.

We ended up meeting at Chris & Alissa's house. Gave us a chance to talk over the trip, thoughts, ideas and excitement for what lie ahead.

Friday nights destination was a few hours away, but with the heat getting ready to turn up in the desert and the boat covers ready to come off, what better place to start out adventure then camping on Lake Mohave. Knowing we have a boating trip set for next month on the lake made it that much more exciting, getting a peak at out summer fun. Our cut through Twenty Nine Palms didn't pay off, as we hit a road block on the 66 that sent us back tracking in order to get on the 40.

Finally we made it, around 1:30 A.M. Everyone that was tired towards the end, woke right up once we hit dirt. Cold beverages and a warm fire welcomed us as we setup camp and enjoyed the starting point of our trip.

We enjoyed our morning breakfast while we took in the view. As hard as it was to leave, we had to get our journey started. A long day stood before us, not to mention the questionable weather in the forecast.

Most of the road leading into the Lake Mohave area was a blast! Although they suggested 4wd was recommended, we never needed it.

Slight detour to Palm Gardens for much needed gas, then hit a power-line trail that would drop us off on the Mojave Road.

As mentioned in the beginning of the adventure report, I made everyone in the group their own "history guide". When the power-line trail intercepted the Mojave Road, we stopped to read the story of how the road became what it is today. Starting back when the Indians used it all the way through to when it was opened as a recreational trail. It made the entire experience that much more interesting, knowing when and why this was all created.

As we finished our history lesson, we loaded up to begin our journey on the Mojave Road.

Once atop Lanfair Valley, we picked up our pace after the slow going mountain pass. The custom suspension on the vehicles made short work of the dirt before us and not long after another group came into view. So we slowed down to give them a good distance prior to stopping at the school bus for lunch and a much deserved cold beverage.

What fun would a trip like this be without your friends!?!?

Lanfair Valley was epic. The flowers, cactus and joshua tree's all in bloom made the drive through almost surreal. Amazing how much color the desert can have.

Having never done the drop into Rock Springs, this was the perfect time to do so. We caught back up to the group that was in-front of us and watched them descend the rutted out hill. It must be a "Jeep Thing", as they required about 5 minutes each to get down to the bottom :D. We waited patiently until it was clear and sent the long travel Bronco and Ranger down first. No spotter. No critical line selection. No worries. Basically drove right down.

My Tacoma didn't have any problems either. No 4wd, just rear locker.

Off to Rock Springs.

Forgot the tripod so I couldn't get the exact angle, but still tried to match history.

We relaxed a bit before heading to the Rock Springs Cabin. It was at this point that the weather starting changing. For the worse. We noticed the fast moving clouds and darkness over the hill in the direction we were heading as well as sprinkles here and there.

Right before we left the Rock Springs Cabin, the smell of wet desert came.

Then the rain...

https://flic.kr/p/rpU2TG

If you've been on the Mojave road before, you know at this point the trail ahead sticks out like a sore thumb. Although the camera/editing managed to pick it up well, it was almost indistinguishable to the eye.

We set off towards Marl Springs, questioning what we would do about tonight's camp...

Throughout all the years of being in the desert, came across the 2nd desert tortoise! We stood back and waited, and waited, and waited hoping it would continue it's path across the trial to no avail. We ended up picking it up, moving and setting it down slowly on the bank in it's direction. Made sure all was well and went on our way.

Once at Marl Springs, the rain finally stopped to make way for hail...

We had two more stops to make, the Flag Pole and the Lava Tube, before figuring out what we were going to do for camp in this weather. Already wet and cold, we set off to finish the days adventure.

Being one that spends countless hours on topographic maps and researching the general vicinity before a trip, I knew of a cabin that could possibly give us shelter from the desert storm. Even though it was a detour off the Mojave Road, I let the group in on my idea and with everyone's approval, we set off for refuge from the storm.

Not even 10 minutes upon arriving, the rain started coming down. Followed by lightning and thunder. We couldn't be more thankful for having a roof over our heads.

As the storm rolled through and the rain came down we were all thankful of our dry camp spot. Eventually, the clouds broke and the evening sky attempted to break through. Finally we could relax, cook up some dinner and enjoy some cold beverages.

Reuniting with the Mojave Road, we set off to Soda Dry Lake. It was a big question on whether it would be cross-able after the previous days rain. No mud and a abundance of dust was all the confirmation we needed.

Great report..especially like the re-creation shots at the rock outcropping!

Also check out Dennis' other book, The Military Road. We picked it up at The Hole In The Wall Ranger station. Really great history of the early 1800's and how the Civil War affected the area.

Afton Canyon is by far the most scenic and iconic portion of the modern day Mojave Road. We took the time to cruise through, stop at the railroad crossings and eat lunch until we caught a train passing through.

Out of Afton Canyon, we got back into the Mojave Wash and followed it to Manix Wash. Having to get back on the main highway with everyone else is a real bummer after spending a couple days all to yourself. Good thing is, although the primary trip was over, the group wasn't done yet. Off to Slash X we went for a beer and plan some additional dirt miles.

We managed to squeeze a couple more hours out of the day, but regardless, towards the end you can feel the impending doom that the trip is about to end. We hit the I-15, said our goodbyes and started the journey home.

I'll have to check it out, as well as a few others I've had my eye on. Thanks for the recommendation!

Great pics and report. Where is the first camp site and the cabin? I have done the trip few times but never saw that

Cool trip report, thanks for posting. I am trying to dial in some info on this road for a mid May run so it was cool to check out your post. The bus photo is a solid one...

Great report and pics. Thanks for taking the time to put all of that together. I drove the MR for the first time in January and am anxious to go back.
