Lakes and wildflowers. Lakes and wildflowers. Lakes and wildflowers. The enormous Grand Mesa of western Colorado contained a myriad of them on the 4th of July, 2013 along with the usual mosquitoes that the watery Grand Mesa is famous for BUT the bugs were pretty tame for once probably due to the very dry conditions we have been having. My wife and I motored up the south side of Grand Mesa through Cedar Edge and on upward out of the smoky, dusty air of the Uncompahgre Valley to the beautiful highlands of Grand Mesa which reach well above 10,000 ft on average for many hundreds of sq miles. The highest points reach over 11,000 feet along the superbly scenic Crag Crest and at the Mesa's highest point which is Crater Peak at 11,327. Whether cross country skiing, sledding, or snowmobiling during the winter or fishing, hiking, exploring the hundreds of small lakes and reservoirs during the summer or viewing the huge expanses of golden aspens during the fall this enormous expanse known as the Grand Mesa is well worth exploring.
While my wife hiked six wondrous miles of the Crag Crest Trail I wandered below her viewing the beautiful wildflowers and several lakes such as Island Lake near the high knife-like spine of Crag Crest. Here are a few photos of my July 4th of wildflowers and scenic views. My photos are not the best but the area was and is terrific.
