Land Cruiser TLC ICON Baja 1000 edition

Hear that sound? That's TLC laughing all the way to the bank. ;)

I respect their craftsmanship, however I'm obviously not a member of their target market.

I'm a young old codger, so I'll just say that putting Shivy junk under a perfectly good LC skin is not craftmanship... There is litteraly NO engineering done to these rigs, it's all just resto work and a fancy body. the Axles/T-case/Tranny can all be had at a junk yard (where they belong) for a very nominal donation, the motor isn't anything special or desirable IMO, but yes they are laughing... Personaly I'd punch'm in the nose and make'm stop...

Geez....$145k, and the wheels are closer to hitting the body in the back than mine are...

The detailed pics in Trails a while back were very nice.

But the whole Domestic axles, engine, tranny, t-case just completely turns me off to it. If you look at TLC's site, they have a long history of using Chevy V-8s in their restorations.

The whole thing seems to be designed to use off the shelf parts that can be easily bolted together with minimal fabrication and modification.

If they would have incorporated a Toyota V-8, Maybe a manual 80/100 tranny and part time T-case and some beefed up 80 axles, then we'd be talking.

But still, it's an interesting concept.

I agree totally. My favorite LC build ever is the guy who put the 2UZFE and 80 series axles in his FJ55.

THose guys do nice resto work but come on an LS6?! I mean first of all use some real toyota power. Second 145K are they nuts? How the hell could you possibly run up a 145K bill on any cruiser? they must be operating on a keystone profit margin.
They are not a resto it is a replica. Its new stem to stern.

I'm sort of torn about the Chevy power plant as well. Honestly it only looks like a TLC it is more Chevy then anything. After all its not rusted out. :p

The site is down for the company.

For 145K a baja edition land cruiser should be running some ultra cool long travel front and rear IFS set up with a built and superchaged tundra engine for starters.

Having seen one of the original FJ's to have raced in Baja at the Expo a year or two ago, that one isn't even a replica. Sorry. No way. Not even close.

Now, if they can get someone to pay them that kind of change for it then more power to them.

Being a Cruiser guy, it may be blaspemous for me to say this... I HATE IT.

After the V8 hating that just went down I'll spew more blasphemy when I say that I do however LOVE my small blocks in both of my Cruisers. I will also agree that for the coin it shouls be 100% Toyota in the drivetrain. But I sure as hell wouldn't build it that way. I'd drop the $145k on building my own version of Rod Millen's RetroCruiser.

Hell, I'll spew even more Cruiser blasphemy and say that I'd rather drop $145k on two of these:

And take a friend with me to run the 1000.

**EDIT**

Damnit Bruce! You ruined my fun. I guess that's what I get for watching the videos of the Wildcat instead of posting.

**EDIT AGAIN**

I'd venture to guess this could be had for less than the Icon too.

For $145k you could build a sweet fj40 and still have enough money to fund one hell of an expedition. My step dad looked at getting one of the 1st icons built, but decided to get a 100 and have slee outfit it. He felt it was a better use of his money. I agree.

hey

I must say with all this american bashing about chevy this and chevy that; why don't you take your TOY junk and move to japan for some real off-roading or is there any Hmmm. Real men know that Jeeps rule like it or not even when their powered by Chevy. Toy's are for kids who haven't grown up yet, and if it wasn't for Chevy and other american brands you would still be driving rusted out imports equipped with 4 cyl. motors with no power. At least we agree on one thing, we are free to buy what we want and we drive darn near anywhere we want. Let all all keep the trails clean!

I haven't heard sentiments like this since the oil shortage in the 70's

It would seem to be more about personal preferences for engines, rather than targeting countries where the engines are manufactured.

Maybe we should stick to technical details instead of trying to pit one nation against an other?

As Martyn mentioned, please bring the topic back to technical details or this thread will be deleted.
