Land Rover SVX models coming ?

Tata's Jaguar Land Rover division has a Special Vehicle Operations branch. SVO is responsible for several high performance, high luxury models in the Jaguar and Range Rover lines.

Now Car and Driver magazine says that SVO will develop a Land Rover model (or models) for extra off-road capability. The vehicles will be identified by the designation SVX.

No one yet knows how the Land Rover might be modified to add off-road capability. What's your guess? More power? Portal axles? Back half tube buggy? (no, probably not)

So let's see. Tata has SVO. Ford has its Special Vehicle Team (SVT). Toyota has Toyota Racing Division (TRD). Nissan has NISMO. Jeep has AEV. (No, it's Mopar.) What's your favorite vehicle high performance skunkworks ?

Looking forward to the effort. Hoping they return to their previous work, similar to the Great Divide Edition (89/90) and the Camel Trophy series.

So, has the Expedition Portal LR4 been kidnapped by Land Rover?

keep in mind the whole point of the GDE event was to show how capable a totally stock Range Rover even in fairly difficult terrain was and to demonstrate the new ABS braking system in this environment.

increasing off-road capability?

fairly easy ones in no order of importance would be:

1. factory front and rear lockers with appropriate axle, etc. increased robustness;
2. typical body and drivetrain protection with factory diff covers and frame bolted rock sliders;
3. increased clearance with larger tires and appropriate gearing;
4. electronics tailored to more demanding situations;
5. winch package with appropriate bumper;
6. recovery points front and rear;
7. a "how to use" all the stuff instruction class - like what is offered by other manufactures when you buy a high performance vehicle and you go to a track for instruction

Maybe a pretty stock vehicle (like those pictured) that can handle this sort condition and keep on going?

I doubt it.

Personally I've always thought the addition of bolt on/bolt in stuff from the factory a bit nuts. I think people prefer more personal modifications (I could be wrong).
I'd much rather see a very basic vehicle designed to be easily modified by the owner.

That said, it is nice to see they haven't completely forgotten the off-road community.

Let's hope SVX is not just special editions with 6 wheels and $500,000 price tags, like G-Wagen's latest. It's perfectly OK to make vehicles that only Saudi princes and internet billionaires can afford. Just throw the rest of us a bone once in a while.

Yes they have a "S" version coming out but it is performance only. I don't know the exact badging but it's coming. A software tune and some other small things.

If we were betting a batch of cookies, I would not bet we'll get anything that costs less than the current standard models. Meaning, an LR4 or 5 in "more off road oriented mode" will be at least $70k, not $50k, not less, no way, not in the US market. It's too bad but if you simply imagine yourself in the CEO shoes, why spend $$$$ on tolling for a tiny market when goofy people will buy things like the Evoque, RR Sport, Disco sport, etc.

Simple need bigger fender liner space. Like the Toyota Land Cruiser which could also use "more" space, but it can at least fit a 33" no problem in stock form or 35" after some minor mods, similar to what we do on an lr3/4 to barely fit a 32".

"electronics" ? No, LESS electronics for systems that when "unhappy" stop you dead in your tracks because some computer doesn't "like" what's going on. Simple example, a stupid sensor causing vehicle to LOWER and drop power forcing you off a roadway to stop when the sensor had nothing to do with safe control of the vehicle.

Oh, and you just described a G wagon....robustness, lockers, axles, (ball swivel!), big tires easy!, pop in taller springs and you're riddin high on 35's+, MB winch pin type bumper available in steel, solid recovery points, don't need much of a "class"....just point, press pedal, go far. ;) Kind of like my almost 20 year old Disco 1. My how far Land Rover have come.... :smiley_drive:

Guess thats what happens when living in Swissland-more Gs than Rovers.
On the electronics doubt LR will reverse course so thought at least tailor them.
