Large Winter Tires

I’m on my third winter of lt2s. Like them. Harder compound than ideal for ice IMHO.

I wish there was something bigger. One guy on cumminsforum has started sipping his toyo mts. Another on Aev forum does too.

If someone finds something larger in a dedicated snow in the US please post it

My 315/70r17s do look smallish on a lifted truck but really basically mine sits at power wagon height with them so not too weird. I’ll post a pic.

What size are your Toyos in that picture? Your truck looks great with both! I’m a little surprised to hear that the Nokians are a little stiff for ice. Hopefully the studs help? Mine will be here tomorrow, wheels came in today.

Thanks! Toyos are 37x12.5r17. When mounted on my rims and that truck they measure 35.5” diameter vertically at 38psi front and 20-30psi rear.

If I remember right the Nokians mounted measured 33” but I’m not 100%. Getting ready to put them back on soon.

Studded snows tend to be a bit harder compound than a studless snow, as they usually have a tread pattern and compound meant for decent lifespan and good grip on snow, slush, etc. They rely on the studs for grip on ice or really slick hardpack. This is why I don't recommend running a studdable tire without studs.

In comparison, a studless snow tire will be softer and usually give up some performance in deep snow (and sometimes slush) due to different tread pattern (usually more rubber contact and more sipes with less open space between tread blocks). The different tread and compound will be intended to get as much grip as possible on hardpack and ice without studs. Studdable tires may also be better in muddy situations due to the more open tread.

I actually wanted to buy them unstuded but they were not available. Glad I didn’t upon seeing the tread hardness. I wonder if the nonstudded version is a different compound....

No experience with them, but studable and have the extreme winter rating.

I had the Nitto ExoGrappler a clone of the Toyo CT. It's a beast of a tire,balanced easily but too noisy above 55mph.

The AEV rims look sharp. My friend's got them. Perfect backspacing for the Rams.

Yup. AEV has been really great about it. Just mounted the nokians on the replacement salta rims today. I don’t hate them but I do miss the katlas....

For what its worth of of the members on a tacoma forum i visit mention that he has ran both duratracs and blizzaks in I think coloroado winters and its currently running running falken at3w and said they out performing both previous tires for him in the snow.

On Ice and compact snow, i've never driven on a better more confidence-inspiring tire. Able to go freeway speeds on curvy mountain roads that other cars and trucks, even with cables on are doing 15-30mph in.

Hauled up to the pass last weekend to get a XMAS tree and it was 37 degrees F. The problem: we've already gotten a ton of snow this year so it was all melting and slushy, really crappy stuff. Even then I was suprised at the ability for these tires to form a nice snow layer around them and grab.

I wanted to to run Dura's as well but they do not come in 37's. So my winter tire is now the Nitto AWT, on my second winter with them and worth every penny to me so far.
