ACK! JONATHAN! I can't believe you posted that! I felt so nerdly. The women are so elegant and gorgeous, and I felt like a real gangly clod amongst them...so....white! Especially when they'd want me to join the dance; that elegant bouncing they do to make the beads shimmy and jump is HARD - but I contributed to some great fun, as every time I tried to dance the warriors would start laughing uproariously and guffawing and pointing. Teenagers and twentysomethings - the same the world over. I'd call them punks 'cept these guys still do spear lions for sport.

I was feeling like I had really gotten my head straight and put some things into perspective on my own trip. But then I read about the work you do and the lives you've touched and I suddenly feel like I'm taking a lot more than I've been giving (which obviously wasn't your intent).

I'm fascinated and extremely grateful that you've shared some highlights from your trip (the Sunday in church sounded like an amazing experience) and now it's got me thinking how we can get more out of our journeys than just trying new mods and running old trails.

Gosh guys - I think many people here contribute hugely to the world on their expeditions, and my trip is just one small part of it. Heck - daktaried has gone to Kenya many times, volunteering countless hours of volunteer medical assistance in horrible conditions. My work pales compared to that - all I have to do is sit through endless speeches, eat several goats, get dressed up in beads and robes, and then go home and raise lots of money to support wildlife conservation, community development and women's empowerment programs!

Thanks for the kind words! And what SO great is how everybody here really does think about JOURNEYS being more than getting from point A to B. Awesome.

Experiences like that have got to make the very large world feel like a very small place. I'm sure they had as much fun as you did.

One last question, as I was just talking about this with some friends: What do they call goat meat? Cow is beef, pig is pork, chicken is chicken. Goat is goat?

Actually, Maasai eat just beef or goat which in Swahili is called nyama (meat) - very few eat chicken, which would be called kuku, and never fish or pork. They do eat some game meat, in some areas still (which is not technically legal), but only opportunistically. They don't hunt it. I don't know what they call the different meats in Maa.

There are lots of language nuances for food that I don't know!
