What do you guys like? I want an AT tire but not sure brand, etc. Any recommendations? My tires will see 5000 miles a year; with 1500 or so on dirt and a little slickrock.

Any thoughts? Thanks, Mike

My all-time favorite all-position tire (laugh all you want) was the first generation BigO XT. On the 100 wore like steel, stuck like glue, wasn't loud like an MT, and was light enough not to kill mileage.

Doesn't matter though they ain't made anymore rather just a re-designed cheaper desert rat version.

On the Hundy though, my other favorite non-AT tire was the Firestone AT, but I ran them in the 255/70r18 size. They are very average looking and no head turner, but lived on our old Hundy with perfectly acceptable performance in mtns and Moab.

I'm going to pick up a set of Yokohama ATS's. We're not going to be doing any major trails, so these will be perfect. A local guy with a 4Runner has these and has taken it up Forrest Lake and Rattlesnake with no problems. However, if price wasn't a concern, I'd probably go with BFG KO's. I'm trying to decide if the 285's are worth it over the stock size. (More expensive tires and little less MPG). When I get a proper A/T or M/T tire, I will go up to a bigger size, but perhaps I will stay with stock sizing for now.

They've got the 285/75/16 ATS's for $148. They're local, so no shipping.

Discount Tire Direct has them for $147 with free shipping, but you do have shipping time. Or, if you go to Discount Tire, they will usually price match with DTD.

EDIT: Or, if you're headed down South, pick these up:

Definitely BFG AT KO's... great all-a-rounder with great wear characteristics and no rubbing on a stock Hundy in that size.

I have 295/75/16 BFG AT's and may be moving up to 315's. The AT's wear like iron are quiet on road and passable off road. They have their limits on the rocks tho.

Bridgestone Revos in 285/75/R16 on my TLC. Best combination tire I have tried. I have run MTRs. M55's, Goodyears. Michelins, Off brands, etc.

I'm really impressed with the new Goodyear Duratracs (DTs) in C load range on our team LC100. $165 each shipped from Tire Rack!

They are somewhere between an AT and an MT in design. Very quiet on tarmac, respectable on snow and no problems with mud and gravel. Have not run on slickrock (not much of that out/up here)

We also use the LC/Durtracs to pre-run gravel rally road statges, and have found the DTs very predictable @ >30mph. Some guys are running E range which isn't a bad idea depending on your local terra firma.

I just picked up a set of Duratracs in 285/75r16 for my 80.

I'm really happy with them so far on the highway. Pretty quiet, handling seems fine, and they look pretty aggressive for being an all-terrain.

Sale price was $190 + tax and free mounting and balancing at America's Tire (with a little haggling).

I've always been a big fan of BFGoodrich tires. On the 80 I have 285/75-16 AT/KOs, and on the 62 we run 31-10.50-15 AT/KOs in the mild months, and studded, Cooper Discoverer STs in the Winter.

FWIW:

I am running the Big-O AT in that size. I really like the tread style, open enough for Utah's mud, and a 50k warranty. I have had a set of the XT's that were fantastic also. Super quiet on the road...

I just put a set of 285/75R16's on the 100 series and love them. I went with ******** Cepek Radial FC-II's. It's not a tire I would have ever considered, nor bought until a lengthy discussion with Redline. He really is the Imelda Marcos of the tire industry, do a search for his tire write ups. He tests tires by his pocket book. He bought two different sets (Different sizes) to test and his research indicated approximately 3000 miles per 32nd of thread wear. These come from the factory with 20/32nd's.

That's about a 48,000 mile tire if you replace them at 4/32nd's (Wear bars show at 2/32nd's). The tire balances well and has a pattern somewhere between an A/T and M/T. I've put 800 miles on them since getting them last thursday and they have performed well. It's been 800 hard miles, towing a flat bed car trailer and then the kimberly to Death Valley and down into SoCal. They've grown on me.
