Leaf Springs

I just left the top plate open, but I've been considering cutting up the stock trim piece and bolting it in there. As far as skid plates go, I'm still using the stock plates. I did modify the front skid plate to bolt up to the bumper and it seems pretty sturdy.

For anyone still wondering about the OME issues here they are. They do reposition the axle, but they moved it to far forward. Before the tires hit in the back, now they hit in the front. Here are some pictures, it will be a simple fix.

What was the fix, just trimming? Or relocate back a little bit? Good information to know, though, either way.

Interesting situation, how old are your OME springs? Are they actually OME or are they OME Dakars?

I have had original OME's on my Tacoma for well over 4 years now. I have been extremely pleased with them over the years and I have had as much as 1000 lbs in the back of my truck.... or none, I like them in both aspects.

I have never had an issue with front rubbing, mine do rub in the rear when fully "stuffed", but just as they begin to rub the top of the fender so I consider it perfectly normal.

I've set up a dozen or so gen one Tacomas with the OME setup, I can't say I recall any of them having issues with the tire hitting the front of the fender, though I have read about the issues several times over the years... I wonder if it has something to do with the original cab configuration? Early Tacomas also require some spring hanger modifications, I wonder if that plays into the problem?

What year is your Tacoma? What cab configuration? What size tires?

They are OME Dakars. It is and 2002 Ext. Cab Taco. TRD and so on. I am running BFG 255/85 MT's. I put the springs on in January. I have not fixed it yet. I am going to try and see what I can do with a hammer. If that doesn't work, I am going to do some cutting. That seems to be the easiest to me. Besides that they are great. I do not regret the purchase at all. They have done everything I wanted and more. I would easily do it again.

What is the difference in the originals and the Dakars? And as a vendor, can you confirm that OME did set the pin forward some?

The original OME springs were manufactured in Aussie, while the Dakars are manufactured in Malaysia (sp?). The move allowed them to reduce the costs of their kits, while still maintaining a high quality product. I've sold literally hundereds of each spring, with zero problems related to their origin... great product for sure.

As for setting the pin forward, I'll have to get a measuring tape out and look into it... as I noted I have not experienced this with any of the kits I have installed, nor is it an issue with my 96' ExCab Tacoma, mine have never rubbed on the front, rather the rear (which is the way I'd expect them to work).

There were two different spring configurations offered by Toyota, the earlier Tacomas has a much shorter spring than the later models. This requires moving the shackle hanger back if one chooses to use OME springs... not a hard task, just a bit more work.

I've got some OME Dakar Tacoma rear springs sitting in stock, but I don't have any stockers off of a vehicle to compare them against (I get rid of them pretty quickly after an install ;)). If someone has a loose stocker to take a measurement give me a ring.

It seems that the rubbing, whether front or back, is on folks running the 255/85's...which are, from what I have read, a tight fit. A tight fit...but a size I am still considering....:hehe:

I am almost certain I will end up with the OME stuff. Worst case, I can just measure before I install, and respond accordingly. There are several possible fixes, it seems.

Finally got my springs...

So, I finally got off my lazy butt and did something about my sagging springs. I decided to take my springs directly to deaver and have them add a couple leaves.

I went from a 7-leaf to a 9-leaf setup and so far so good... The extra leaves had a minimal impact on ride quality, but I gained a lot more load capacity. The guys at deaver did an excellent job too. I brought my springs to them (off the truck) and they had them back to me in about 2.5 hours all freshly painted and ready to go!

Here are a few pics of how its riding now, with a bit of weight (Can-Back, bike racks/basket, sleeping platform, Hi-Lift and some random tools...). I forgot to take a before pic, but it measured 1.5" lower in the back than in the front. Now I'm at 1.5" higher.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the advice,

Jake

1.5" higher is good to hear, I will be sending mine back in a few weeks, and was hoping they would get back up where they were, so I can then reload the fronts to compensate for the winch/bumper mass. Truck looks good, and I'm glad to hear the ride is good w/ 2 add'n leaves.
