learning about 80 series before purchase

whats the average annual cost to keep 80s going?

Hmmm this is a loaded question. Aside from gas, You'll have to consider that oil changes are 7.4qts and a filter and any other maintenance which is run of the mill. Transmission fluid, Coolant (2-Gal Toyota Gen.), brake Fluid, etc. It's a bit more expensive given the amount of fluid, but it's not terrible. Also, stuff to consider is that the truck is heavier so you'll have to replace your rotors during brake changes.

how many miles do those motors and transmissions go assuming it has been well maintained ?

I'm at 148k, just had to replace the rear main seal, rear crank and front crank seal. Other than that... no problem. Though the past 6 months, I have been overhauling my 80. I would recommend doing the PHH hose for sure.

whats the average MPG ?

I'm getting 11.5mpg or about 250 miles per tank, though I just replaced the PCV valve and am not sure what kind of milage I'm getting now.

are the parts easy available ?

Absolutely! Any Toyota dealership will have parts readily available, including the TRD turbo system for the 96 LC. I usually hit up Sam at Lowe Toyota, he's the Parts Manager there and gives forum guys a break plus free shipping.sstewart@lowetoyota.com

do the back seats fold all the way in? can it be sleeping platform?

Not really but they do come out. Check these guys out. They make a sleeping deck if you want.

most of them i see have over 180k miles what should i check before i buy it?

Check, all your hoses, sparks, cap and rotor, oil pan, likely the rear main seal is going, but other than the rubber pieces, this truck will keep going... in fact I drove 30k miles with 2 of the 3 belts in place (scary after i found out).

Have a good time with it... it's the best truck I've ever owned... It's robust and durable.

my preferance would be to go with the 1HDT 4.2 turbo diesel as they will last to over 1 000 000 km (yes 1 million km) when serviced regularly (i had a HZJ80 with 1HZ ,non turbo, and it had almost 700 000 km on it on the original untouched motor and it would still accelerate up hills in 5th gear)

They're available in Canada, but they're all RHD imports, and have to be over 15 years old.

I'm in the same boat. Looking to get my first expedition type vehicle and have pretty much settled on the 80 series.

I've had my 80 for a few years now. Amazing vehicle. Comfortable, reliable, off-road capable. Get one in good condition, and you won't regret it.

how many miles do those motors and transmissions go assuming it has been well maintained ? There was a thread on Mud about this, I would say average that posted was about 250k before a major rebuild, some are reporting 400k on all original drivetrain.

My 1991 (with the mighty 3FE) is still in my family and going strong at 300,000 miles on an all-original drive train. To my certain knowledge, the head has never been off. I would drive that truck across the country tomorrow without any special preparation or a second thought.
