LED Lighting

Unsure where to locate this post but will try here;

Ever come across a product that is just plain cool that you want to find different uses for it? This fits the bill. A weatherproof strip of 96 LEDs, 39" long, flexible (can tie it in a knot), 12v, and can chain them together. Several colors available, $20 per strip.

I found them via another forum where they are using them as rock lights. The claim was the "bright white" (almost blue) was as bright as 50w halogens. I picked up some green ones to use as task lighting in the tailgate, in the RTT and under the floor of the RTT (ladder area). These things are bright! Blindingly bright and I am sure the bright white is even more so. I'm thinking bright white for engine underhood light. You could use it for a reverse light on the bumper. I may experiment with a DPDT switch and resistor to make a selectable bright/dim option. I measured it at 1 amp.

Here are the links. The vendor, Rick, is reliable and quick, had mine in hand within 3 days.

I've been thinking of using something like that in red for night lighting in my camper shell. These may be a bit too much, though!

Just FYI. Dropped him a line on the brilliant white that are currently OOS. He indicated they are currently in production in China and he expects them mid-November.

I dont like to have a large illumination footprint while camping. If you stop using a flashlight to walk across the campsight you'de be surprised how well you can get around. In that vain, not too many tasks require bright light, perhaps engine bay work, but certainly not retrieving a pop from the fridge.

I went with the green which is plenty bright enough to read a paper and in fact brighter than necessary. Initial experiments indicate that 25 ohm resistor is not quite enough dimming, I think I can double that for the dim position.

All of which is a verbose way of saying that you may find the other colors sufficient for the task.

Note that these things are rubbery flexible and can be mounted in any shape with flex-ties. I picked up a .25x.50 aluminum channel and stuffed it inside for a stick that encases the strip. Also found a microswitch that fits inside the channel. They also include some plastic mounting tabs for random mounting.

If I could figure out how to post pics I will.

Agree on not always needing the bright light-but when you do need it, you really need it. Was thinking about running two strips in parallel, one white and one red, with a double-throw rocker switch to control which is selected.

On the LED pods, I have also used stuff from Brad Taylor at Toller Boatworks. He sells a really nice small NexLED pod for $10.
