Lets talk 4Runner engine swaps

I was at a Toyota car/truck/SUV show on Sunday, and one of my moderators was there with his '92 Xtracab truck, and had swapped a 3.4 with the TRD supercharger into into it.
Very nice setup.

Another moderator on YotaTech also has swapped in the 3.4 into his 2nd gen 4Runner, but has not supercharged it yet.

The 3.4 would be a good choice, and there are plenty of write-ups on forums about doing them.

This is what I would recommend. If you look up Off Road Solutions (I know they closed, but I think you can still get some parts), they carry a complete swap kit. Supercharged will add more than enough power.

What about a supercharged 2.7? Lightweight, good mileage, reliable and bullet proof.

This is a decent idea, but he says a v6 with 190 hp isn't enough, then a 4 cylinder pushing roughly the same wont do for him either. The 2.7 supercharger is on my list of future mods.

I would go 3.4 Toyota. If you look at it from a hp and torque to weight ratio the late model 4 runner with 4.0 4x4 is 4330lbs 236hp 266 ft lbs. A1985 4runner with the 3.4 is 3895lbs 183hp 217ft lb. The current runner has a weight ratio of 18.3 hp and torque of 16.27. The 1985 would be 21.28hp and torque of 17.90. It should out perform your current model in performance, well at least on paper. Drop a super charger on and look out!

I would do a 3.4L swap (keep it Toyota), and Turbo it. Keep the boost modest - 7psi - and you'll have a motor that will survive indefinately, sound uber cool, and drive like a bat outta hell. My buddy's 01 tacoma has been boosted from the day it was bought and is well over 100k miles, turboed, at 12psi, daily driven. Only down side is, you'll have to build the manifold yourself, or find a seasoned turbo mani fabricator to build you one. I built mine for my 2000 4runner out of mild steel, had it ceramic coated, and is still holding strong - no leaks, cracks, issues at all.

Heres a link to my buddy's write up for some good reading for you.

Edit: Since your going to be doing a swap into an older truck, it will require you to run larger injectors (440's), and a stand alone computer like megasquirt, ems, haltech, or similar. But once its all set up and tuned correctly, you'll never look back.

I love the TLT first gen., actually their 3rd gen was extremely well done as well. Could those spring be blasted and p'coated again?

J-Man, that is a great write up on your friends turbo Tacoma.

Cory could probabaly answer this one but what happened to the third gen guy on Yotatech that was building a turbo for his 3.4? He had volk wheels and supercharged it to within an inch of it's life.

Nullifier, you make a great point about power:weight ratio.

I think Pheonix Tuning picked up on the conversion harnesses after ORS quit. A 3.4 to 3.0 is basically a harness, new cross-over pipe and a little rearanging in the engine compartment.

I have a 1UZFE alum. block 6bolt main V8 out of a '94 Lexus SC400 that i am slipping into my '87 runner. 75lbs heavier than the 22re, 260hp/260#ft. stock. Hasnt made it off the engine stand in my garage yet, but on the list......

I second the 1uzfe one of my buddies just finished doing a 1uzfe swap into his 93 4runner and blows the doors off of his supercharged 3.4 (5vz) tacoma. The 1uzfe is light built to take any abuse and cheap to be had.:)

Picked up a truck today. '88 base model 4cyl, 5 speed...and so it begins.

I know the 22RTE doesn't get much love, but are there any solid builds of this engine documented on the 'net?
