Well got the code pulled, P0475, exhaust pressure control valve malfunction. So a 97 cali truck WILL set the code with a cel if you unplug your ebpv, or at least mine will!

Seems as though some trucks will throw the code and some will not. My 1997 Cali 7.3 also threw the code when the EBPV was disconnected. There is a fix from a company called dfuser. They sell a part called the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve Terminator. It tricks the computer and will eliminate the code issue. I bought one and it works.

Thanks guys! Initially had that exact thought that $30 was a lot for what it is, but I probably will get one vs. wiring something up my self, free time has been at a premium for me lately.

For all the OBS owners out there, if you ever have a random popping noise in the front end that you can't find, check your fender bolts next to the hood hinges. Seriously. I have had a random popping noise while turning, going over bumps, downshifting on the highway, etc. for a while now. Couldn't find play anywhere in the front end, had me totally puzzled. Was browsing forums last night and came across a thread, tightened the bolts this afternoon and no more front end popping! Best free fix I've had in a while!

I can confirm that fix!!! My 300k mile work truck did that too!!! I just got mad and started searching for something loose. I noticed a rust track at the bolts on the driver side- a big tale tale they were loose. Sure enough- I tightened them up and no more popping!!

Well I decided last week that instead of taking my cooling system apart and trying to fix the lower hose outlet leak and the heater hose leak on the water pump I would just put in a new pump, hoses, etc. that way I would feel good about the cooling system for my upcoming trips this summer. Ordered everything earlier in the week, got home from the ski hill today and saw the box on the porch. Got out of the truck, smelled coolant, discovered the leak got a lot worse LOL.
Guess I will be doing the job next week once all the hoses and thermostat are here. Hopefully I can track down the fan clutch wrenches to rent at a shop. Wish me luck!

Be aware of the issue I had. The lower hose was collapsing on the freeway. It would idle fine and around town it was ok. Over 40 mph the hose would collapse and overheat the truck. I thought the hose was good quality but I guess that doesn't exist anymore.

Thanks, have heard of that happening. Haven't had any overheating issues with the truck, just leaks, it actually runs cool. Waiting on my hoses, thermostat, and housing then I guess it is time to go to work!

Well, got the new water pump, tstat, and hoses in the truck yesterday. Still think I have a little air in the system but she is running good! Sure is nice to have a leak free truck and not smell coolant after a long drive! Didn't do a full flush on the system as I didn't want to deal with the mess and I have a dog amd there are lots of cats around the neighborhood, would hate to have anything start drinking the antifreeze!
I got the airtex pump off rockauto, partly for the great price, partly because I read somewhere they were the OEM supplier. I was very impressed with the quality, all surfaces were clean, threads clean, etc.
I will have to grab a picture of the old pump later. The impeller was grinding against the housing and nearly seized. Glad I didn't get stuck somewhere!
Also put in a new door striker to finish the hinge job I did last fall and I installed the ebpv pigtail plug from riffraff mentioned on the last page. No leaks and no CEL, it feels like christmas morning!

Couldn't help but think of this post when working yesterday. The hose I took off had a spring running the length of it, new one did not. Ran the piss out of it on the highway last night with no issues so hopefully my concerns are unfounded but I will be keeping an eye on it.

The spring used to be stainless steel on some hoses, I always pull it from the old hose and "thread" into the new one if it's still in good shape. Cheap insurance against the sucking issues.

Well, I think my fuel pump may be dead. Ugh! Was headed home yesterday and the fuel filter light flickered for a second when I started it, drove home fine after that. Figured I would change the fuel filter as it had been awhile. Noticed a little vacuum on the bowl when I opened it but figured no big deal. Put a nee filter in, started it and idled for a minute or so, all good. Went to start it this morning, fired right up, ran for 2 minutes or so, studdered and died. Now it wont start, isn't refilling the bowl. Put some ATF in the bowl and couldn't even get it to start with a full bowl? No pressure seems to be building at the schrader valve when cranking either.
I just can't imagine that the lift pump would straight up fail with so little warning? But it has to be either a pump failure or a blocked line, right?
I've tried switching tanks several times, putting the old filter back in to make sure the standpipe check valve depresses all the way. Tomorrow or monday I will get a can of diesel and pour some into the bowl and see if I can at least get her to start.
This sucks as I think a fuel pump replacement may be a bit beyond my skill level and I don't want to replace it to discover its not the problem, either!

Well the shop was able to get the fuel system primed and all is well with the pump, putting out good fuel pressure. Still confused why it is fine now but glad to not write that check!
Looking forward to doing a little work on the door panels in the next couple weeks then taking off on a Western CO trip in mid june with the dog.

Put around 650 miles on the rig this weekend running down to Fruita to do some biking, camping, and romping around muddy desert roads. Truck didn't miss a beat. Have a leak somewhere behind the dash that lets a few drops of rain in if you go 75 in a downpour, but probably not gonna spend too much energy on it as dry as it normally is here. Also getting what I think is some cupping starting on the RF tire. Not sure what to do about it as the front end appears tight other than a little slop in the steering box. Maybe this thing will get a 60 one day!
