Little Stinker

Caught this little guy out in the backyard the other night. I had noticed for a few days that the grass looked a little dug up and wondered what it was. Focus is off as it was pretty dark and he was running around quite a bit. He was pretty small and fearless too. I made the mistake of going prone to steady the shot a bit more and he almost walked right up to me. :Wow1: What are you supposed to do in that situation? LOL

FYI the second shot is at 180mm, and I didn't crop or correct it for the tilt to show how close he was at one point. (I think I was trying to reverse Army crawl and take a pic at the same time.) He came a whole lot closer still and luckily kept walking by...probably with-in 3-4 feet. :Wow1:

The final shot I took didn't come out at all, but he whipped around and popped that tail up and that was all the warning I needed to call it a night. I kept laughing to myself after wards about how different this thread could have been..."How do you get the skunk funk out of your gear?"

It was probably seeing spots in front of it's eyes from the flash which makes you one lucky guy because it couldn't tell where you were for your lesson on who owns that yard now

Great shots! The second shot looks like he's ready to turn and lift his tail!

They usually only squirt when threatened, could be with you being prone, the little dude didn't feel to threatened.

Either way, not much fun at the time! I had one get into my pup tent while in the field in the Army. I was on a small flat 'ledge' on a hill, when I saw the skunk with my flashlight, all heck broke loose!

I dropped the light, squeeled like a little girl, covered my self up in my mummy sack, and rolled sideways out of my tent, dragging it and my gear downhill!

The skunk escaped the mess, probably becuase the Army shelter halve type tents have no floor, so he got out. He then proceeded to hit other tents around the perimeter, as evidenced by the other screams and commotion I heard:Wow1: Luckily, no one got sprayed that night.

Fun times!:coffeedrink:

It's Peppi!

You don't have a female black cat that mistakenly walked under a paint brush with white paint on it??:sombrero:

Brave shot's.

I have dealt with those for years. Stay still, that is the right thing. Personally, I don't get down at all cause the spray they say stings your eyes like nothing you have ever felt. I have had them come right up and smell my shoes, rub their bodies against my boot cuffs (to scratch I guess) and walk all around me. As soon as you move or even twitch, the tail starts to perk. The babies are the worst, they spray anything and everything for practice. And they don't have their stripe yet, so they truly look like kittens.

As for getting the "funk" out, sell your gear.

My mother-in-law adopts every orphan animal she finds on our family farm. Baby skunks are pretty friendly and I've never seen one spray a person. The problem is, they get mean as they mature. Here's a a skunk my mother-in-law cared for until it went to a local "Skunk Rescue" facility:

Ha! A pretty cute little guy. I think my dog wouldn't have the self control to not go after him. Cool that the dog in the photo doesn't seem to mind the friend tagging along.

Sorry that you couldn't tell I was joking around. Tucson vs. Phoenix :sombrero:

Maybe I'm just overly sensitive to this because I work with many different cultures in my job. Email communications can get quite entertaining.

I saw some TV show on skunks not too long ago, and they said the skunks spray as a last resort (like a snake striking). I've had them wander through camp, sniffing around with no problems. I would be more concerned about rabies than getting sprayed. That pic of bottle-feeding the baby skunk is priceless.
