Lock in Hub 4wd Question

Hey Guys,
Hoping someone may know something about this problem. I have a 92 Pickup. The other day I found that my passenger side lock-in hub wouldn't turn. It seemed frozen in the "free" position. With a lot of effort I got it to turn, but as I turned the other one and got in to drive off, the front wheels were not in 4wd. I had the trans shifted into 4 hi and then 4 low, and still nothing. I turned the hubs back to 2wd and now I keep it there because that passenger hub is still frozen in "free." I haven't opened up the hub yet, but I just want to know if anybody might have an idea on what's going on.

Someone probably put too much heavy grease in there or water leaked in. This is all assuming the stock asin hubs, which should be black face with a red dial. I would pull the face(easy), which consists of the 6 bolts going through the black part. Check to make sure everything is clean, no moisture penetrated, and it isnt jammed full of heavy grease. Re-assemble with a new hub face gasket and light grease. If you need the hub dial gasket number I have it in my garage and could look it up for you. When the face is out turn the red dial portion and hold the clutch on the back to "lock" the hub and make sure everything is working and clean. There is an FSM on ASIN hubs on marlin, or here is a link to 93 hubs. I would clean and inspect before I do a rebuild. Make sure NOT to over tighten the face bolts that can jab things up as well. The link below or on marlins forum website should have the torque specs(10N/M or 7ft/lbs.

Good luck.

Chances are they just need a rebuild/regrease and new seals. I put these on my T100, and followed these write-ups:

The gaskets from Toyota are pretty cheap...around $30 if I remeber correctly. Just make sure you put some penetrant on those cone washers and use a brass bar if you have to lightly tap the wheel studs to get them to pop off. Just clean everything well, use some snapring pliers, and you should be good to go. BTW, watch that rear snapring...it's a pain to get back on because the edges are tapered, and not designed to be opened with snapring pliers. It took a good bit of effort and grease to get it back on. And most of all, don't pack the hubs with grease...a coat on the parts will be just fine. if they get packed, they won't work.
Good luck! :sombrero:
Here's a bit of a comprehensive post I put up after installing them: http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3312186&postcount=10

Thanks so much guys... I love this forum for people like you willing to help all the time! Anyway, yeah it is the stock Asin hub, so I guess when I get back home I'll open it up and give it a good cleaning. I'll post something else if I need the part numbers or whatever, but I think I can handle it from here. Thanks again.
