Locker install Question!

I just started the install of my spartan locker on my 2001 Cherokee with d35 rear axle. I jacked up the rear and have the axle tubes resting on jack stands. I have the tires/wheels/drums/diff cover removed. I blocked the front wheels, put trans and xfer case into neutral. The axle shafts spin freely.

However, I cannot rotate the carrier to get good access to the Cross Shaft retaining pin. What's the trick? I do not think the Cross Shaft will come out in the position it's in, so I have to figure out something.
