Locker Rear End Question- Complete '94 Into a '99?

I found a complete locker rear with 4:6xx gears in a 1994 SR. Is it a straight swap as a whole unit into my '99?

Do I have to swap the front (because of gear ratios) when I do the rear? So, all the locker controls are the same?

I couldn't find anything on anyone swapping complete rears, just gears. Maybe I'm searching incorrectly.

I just dug around 4x4wire too. I still don't see a thread on swapping out the entire rear end or one stating that I need to replace both the front and rear at the same time. Please link if you have them. Thanks!

Finally in expo white.
I think you just swap the third member in the rear and the whole axle in the front?

I don't know. I need to find out before I miss my opportunity to get the parts. I was hoping to just swap the whole rear only.

If you're keeping the same gear ratio front and rear I don't know why you'd need to swap the front axle too.

Looking for that thing i just had in my hand...
It is a bolt up swap front and rear, I have done it many times on Gen 1 V6's and Gen 2's (rears). However the '94 is an oddball year for driveshafts, you will want to swap the pinion flange from your 1999 onto the 1994 rear diff. It's easy but be sure to torque the pinion flange to spec (way up there). You may get lucky and it's a late model '94 with the smaller pinion flange and it'll just work but I wouldn't count on it.

You don't want to just use the '94 rear shaft because they are hard to get U-joints for but you could run it for a while to get you by if you don't have a big torque wrench and a 32MM socket.

But do I have to change the front at the same time?

YES, if you run 2 different axle ratios and use 4wd for even a few feet you will blow up your transfer case. Now, if you removed the front drive shaft or unlock the hubs so there is ZERO binding you can get by for now.

kirk, you're pretty much doing exactly what I'm doing. Here are a couple of photos from my instagram of the parts I pulled last weekend. The rear is HEAVY AS ALL GET OUT! so be ready.... keep the sway bar in place and use it to hold the gears while you let it down slowly. I pulled an extra tire from the junk heap next to the donor montero so the rear wouldn't fall so far.

For the front, undo the crown nuts that hold the steering onto the ball joins, also undo the outermost tie rod end. That will let you yank the axle from the front on drivers side. On the passenger side, you also need to undo a few bolts around the half-shaft (at least I think thats what its called) before you can pull the passenger side completely away. The rest (if I recall correctly) is just the 4 bolts on each side the hold the front to the mounts. (I pulled it from a junked car with engine and transfer case missing, so I had access from top and bottom. There might be a few more bits that need to come undone as well.. you'll spot them.

The rear, if you want to play nice... unbolt the speed sensor from each wheel, you may also need to undo a few of the places where the emergency brake cable is attached to the frame. There are 4 bolts on each axle flange. Undo those, and yank outwardly on brake rotor.. that should free up the diff. Unbolt all the way around the diff housing and use a dead blow hammer to free it up. The thing weighs near 100lbs, it probably won't just fall out, you'll need to work it out. I balanced it on the sway bar as I slowly let it drop onto the an old tire and wheel with some padding over it. (don't forget the sensor for the rear locker, and the airline for the rear locker.

go home and repeat the process. In theory, if you don't undo the gears and separate everything, they are adjusted properly and you can bolt in the new parts. Still makes me a little nervous, but I guess they've got 130k miles (give or take), they probably are still going to work just fine for many miles to come.

you might want to give this thread a once over... someone else just did the same thing in the last couple of weeks.
