So find an old CJ, YJ, TJ cowl with a Vin. Build everything else to suit your wheelbase with your frame. Kinda like Cave did on Pirate4x4. I also read a thread on Pirate where a guy stretched his CJ7 to LJ length and bought some LJ bed rails from Mopar. Ive read your Willy's thread several times, so I know you could pull it off.

I could go that way. I might, but it leaves a lot of efficiency of work on the table if your just going to throw 90% of the base vehicle away.....and you have to purchase the base vehicle...and you have to take it apart.

I'm sure you could find just a tub of any of those... if you were forced to start with a more complete vehicle, there is a lot of little parts that could be re-used that would be a pain to source separately. And things like diffs and stuff could be sold to weirdo restoration dudes...

With all the changes I need to make to the tunnel, length, and rear cargo area I just don't see THAT much bonus in starting with a stock tub. Then there is the top and windshield issues.
I've expanded on it in past posts in this tread.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear. I've read the whole thread, I was thinking if you used only the cowl and front fenders and hood of a Jeep, then building a frame like you did on your Willy's, and then building the back half to fit whatever wheelbase and overall length that you want, with a factory style top or an aftermarket top.

The comment about the bed rails, I meant the part that attaches to the top of the tub to attach the soft top to.

Does that make sense? I think the cowl/hood/windshield area of the vehicle would be the hardest, most time consuming part to scratch build. Everything behind that is easy to build exactly how you want it. The tranny tunnel would be simple to cut out and start over too.

Every state is different, but here in the peoples republic of californistan its a huge pain to register a scratch built vehicle. But, starting with and body that has a Vin, and modifying it is simple.

I stretched my old yj to lj dimensions and loved it! Now I'm doing a cj8 with a tj front clip. Love your ideas! Here's mine.

I understand that would be a logical way to approach it. What I am saying is that it might be cheaper and easier to just buy the tub from Aqualu. Having done a pretty decent amount of body modifications on my last two builds, welding factory sheetmetal sucks. You waste a lot of time trying to blast, clean, and fit custom panels. Having some nice fresh clean .150 thick aluminum panels could make things a LOT easier. I think Aqualu can handle most of the mods I want other than just a few things.

In Colorado it is very easy to register a custom vehicle under the 'kit car' laws.

There is more than one way to do it for sure. I am just choosing what I think is the most efficient one.

I've been really enjoying my little flat fender lately. It really turned into something kinda special.

Probably not what you are looking for but thought I'd throw it out there. Found these pics by accident and held on to them for dreaming. Diesel Cummins (like you ordered?).

Hope to put a Mercedes Turbo Diesel OM617 in mine this summer. Fine for my CJ but probably underpowered for what you want.

M,

Having built almost what you are describing, I like where your thread is heading and have enjoyed scimming the last 21 or so pages.

If you havent allready you may want to take a look at Al's CJ-10A besides the seperate cab and bed it is very similar to what you are describing. It could use some refinements but overall it is a great package that does everything we hoped for even if like all jeeps it is a work in progress.

Yup, read that one more than once. Going on UA this year in the flat fender really gave me some perspective on where I think I am going in this sport, what you need, what you don't need, etc.

In the end I decided to build this....

Which is my version of this....

It is basically a 'buggy' that is skinned in CJ7 panels. That will let me use a CJ windshield, wipers, defrost, doors, tops, etc. Rough specs are going to be...

-4.8 or 5.3 LS truck engine. I made sure to design the chassis to be able to use the truck pan, truck intake, truck accessories, and truck exhaust manifolds to save money.
-TF904/999 Trans. I picked it up cheap, it is the GM bell /D300 version. I got the LS flex plate, converter, fully built and has a RMVB.
-Some kind of 2.72 geared crawler box. I'm not 100% sure on what version yet, probably the ORD magnum.
-Ford NP205 transfer case. Traded for it. It will get modded for twin stick control.
-2003+ AAM dodge 9.25" front, 3.73 gears, auto locker hopefully.
-2003+ AAM dodge 10.5" rear, 3.73 gears, powerwagon locker.
-2003+ dodge 2500 wheels, 17x8", 6" BS, aluminum, hopefully the 'polished' forged version
-42x14.5x17 MTR Kevlars
-3-link + panhard front, steering box with hydro assist, 4-link rear suspension.
-12" shocks set 50/50
-109" wheelbase, no body stretch, front axle pushed about 6", rear axle pushed about 8". ~82" wide.

I'm going to play around using 2 low in the np205 as an underdrive and keeping the 3.73 gears in the axles.

Body panels are inbound now. I have a bit of measuring of the panels to do, some shop cleaning, and then building should start soon.

This kinda thing really isn't an 'expo' vehicle in the traditional sense even though I tend to use all my crazy vehicles that way. I don't know if I will stick a thread up here or not.

One of my absolute favorite jeep builds. I love the looks and the fact that it was built on a real budget, yet still performs great.
