Long range fuel tank

A couple of jerry cans in the back of the pickup bed would be my favorite option for carrying extra fuel, and much less expensive.

Something's wrong with your truck if you are getting only 250 to the tank on the freeway.

At 250miles I've 4gal left. My Taco is pretty heavy with camper on the back, it's about 6000lbs loaded and has the aerodynamic of a brick. :) You can see the pic of it in my sig. With strong head wind the supercharger is always working.

Have you done a gear change yet? I noticed a big difference with how much the sc is winning in the wind with the new gears. At 70 mph I barley hear the SC unless I put my foot into it. Cruise control work much better too. Less shifting.

Haven't been able to find anything on a bigger tank. I'm just sticking with making my own.

Not yet, getting 4.56 on both front and back will need some major funding. Also with 32" tires I'm concern the rpm when cruising at 65-70mph. Since I want to extend my range to ~500miles so I'll need an aux tank with or without regear so aux tank has higher priority than regear.

True,

I found that my RPM was higher (2500) and my gas milage stayed the same if not a bit better due to the lack of shifting all the time from 5 to 4 with hills. A long range tank would certainly help in all areas. The gear would help the heavy truck (like mine and yours) keep and get up to speed and with the extra weight in fuel on board would help there too. Tough choice :)

Re-gear will help for sure.
When $ is available in the future, who knows when in these economy condition , I'll do the 4.56 and ARB locker in the rear. A man can dream right?!

All in good time :)

A gear change will bring the mileage back, very well. I have the same set-up with a 456 gear change and I'm getting 530kms per tank on the highway which is about 325 miles.

BUMP,

05+ Tacoma has been out for 4 years now. Someone must have added an aux tank, anyone has luck finding info on aux tank?

That is all I get too. Been that way since I got the truck. My mods haven't affected fuel mileage like I thought they would. Bone stock gets about the same miles per tank as I do now with lift, wheels, tires, bumpers, sliders, bestop supertop, headers, exhaust, intake mods. Nothing has really helped, and nothing has really hurt. But the power is different, just not mileage.

I've researched this extensively. I have not found anyone with an aux tank on 05+ Taco. I've contacted serveral manufactures and they don't have products because of lack of demand. Worse I wrote the California Air Resource Board (CARB) and they replied that Aux tanks violate the states emmision control "anti-tampering" laws. A couple of tank makers told me this as well (DowneyOffRoad was particularly helpful). Not sure what the rules are in other state. A larger tank would have to be CARB tested and approved. I have not seen one yet.

The CARB thing in really annoying......
If the aux tank uses a transfer pump and a T fitting to the main filling tube. How would they know? When I do my smog test I remember they pop the hood look around then test the gas cap and that's about it.

AUX Tank

It would be easier to get an auxiliary tank put in the spare tire location. It can be filled from the same filler, and have the option of being directly connected to the engine or into the main tank. I will soon be adding a 20 gallon version of this to my 99 4runner... I will post my results after some testing. I will be getting this done for $1000, aux setup, with a switch inside to control transfer, with a full return line to save my stock workings. This will be a custom fab job, aluminum, with a steel skid plate under it for protection. If you are looking for resources for this kind of fab work, talk to the guys down at your local race tracks... they do custom gas tank fabrication all the time, and can probably do it for about the same price as this tank.... that may not even fit your rig properly...

Good luck,:smiley_drive:
