You can put them to the rear of the tube. Just make sure there is clearance(obviously). The closer you stay to the axle tube, the better off you are...(there are obviously exceptions to that rule as well).

I run some gas magnums for a super duty in my half ton for several reasons with the primary one being cost. They net 13 inches of travel and control the 35" tires quite well. They are tough twin wall shocks with additional fluid capacity. Very reasonable from rockauto.com $30/each + shipping.

Depends on the goal. If spring wrap is a serious issue, then spacing the dampers away from the axle tube will help control it.
If best ride quality is the goal then I'd put the lower mounts directly on the axle's "C" brackets. Drop a socket on the upper BJ's nut and bring the shock eye right up against the socket.

Oh yeah.. I am love go fast trucks(off road)... and can expound on different things as far as shocks, location, valving, etc...I just figured to keep it simple for this convo....

Though, I do love discussing suspension design, etc....
