Hi. This is my first post. Im 26 and I live in Northwest Montana. Im looking for a used Mitsubishi Fuso FG 4X4 to build a house on. This has been a dream of mine ever since my mom died when I was in high school. Since then I haven't really had a home. Luckily I have lived here my whole life and have some good friends that I have been living with. But I need a house to call my own. If anyone has any info on a nice vehicle to build a 14 foot house on please let me know. A reasonably priced Fuso FG around the northwest would be perfect. Thanks for all your help.

You can keep an eye open on CraigsList USA.com - it lets you search the entire USA. No recent listings, but here is a link: ... http://www.craigslistusa.net/for-sale?query=mitsubishi+fuso+FG&make=&model=&vehicle=&location=&condition=&color=&vin=&price_min=&price_max=&year_min=&year_max=&mileage_min=&mileage_max=&order=2&search=1&x=0&y=0

I'm still learning about these trucks, but my personal opinion is that you should avoid any truck that has had a dump bed or plow on it..... because it will have been driven really, really hard, and watch out for chassis rust from any truck in the Rust Belt. Unfortunately these two cautions severely limit your choices.

Hi DLils,

Welcome to ExPo. First post...cool huh?

Re:

From experience here, these trucks rarely get rust in the cabs, so if you see one that has a totally rust free cab don't presume that the chassis will be the same. Have a good look at the chassis rails. Look for major pitting on top of the rails , around where the rear rails join into the step section and around the rear suspension hangers. The chassis rails are thin enough as they are without rust pitting so have a good look. Another spot although this wouldn't be a deal breaker is to check the crossmember brace in behind the fuel tank brackets......if they've had a lot of punishment, the weight of the tank bouncing up and down can crack that crossmember attachment. Then check around the suspension hangers for cracks ...same story if they've seen alot of punishment....you'll see cracks there and even the rear shock mount / tube crossmember might be cracked or rusty

I don't know...what else??? .....Obviously you would drive it and make certain all the gears work....take it right through the gears....make sure it doesn't jump out of gear. Make sure it goes into 4wd and low 4 as well. Only other advice I could give would be to try to get something with the lowest K's on the clock especially if you plan for it to be your home.....for me, I wouldn't buy anything with more than 300k km's on the clock unless the price was really, really good.

Good luck with it all.

Regards John.

By 2014 you won't be able to register a 2007 or older into california without adding a DPF. In case anyone in Cali gives a crap?

I'm trying to get my project done and the truck re-registered as an RV before then, so I can hopefully be exempt?

Thanks for all your information. Just curious, what do you think about an Isuzu NPR? There is a 2004 Isuzu NPR, deisel, 5-speed manual, with a 14 foot box, and 120,000 miles on the engine for sale in a town close by for $12,000. No 4 wheel drive :( Fuso fg's are kinda hard to find and are really expensive. Maybe I could make the house removable so maybe some day I could mount it on a fuso frame. Also wondering what king of gas milage you get with a fuso? Would an Isuzu be better on fuel? Thanks again.

They'll get between 11-15mpg depending on the circumstances. Yes, FG's are more expensive. There's a thread here on a NPR build you may want to look at. However, if all you are looking for is a house of your own, there are easier and much cheaper ways to get a nice house. There are tons of used class C and class A motorhomes on the market that are immediately available to live in at a much lower price. Friend of mine recently bought a nice class C on a Ford van chassis with 30k miles for $5k. If you're not looking to go off road, it's a much more cost effective solution.
