I have a 2015 Trail w/ KDSS. Out of the box the offroad capability is very impressive. The KDSS also helps with the suspension articulation.
If you're planning on upgrading the suspension I would get the trail. If you're not planning on upgrading suspension you may want to consider the TRD Pro.
As far as the mods you are considering, there are some great options. For weight savings check out Southern Style Speeds hybrid front bumper -it just replaces the center of the bumper and weighs about 50lb. For the roof rack, stick with aluminum. I'll probably end up buying a K-9 brand roof rack myself.

Just one word of unsolicited advice. We've got 2 kids, and it would've been tight with a mid-size SUV. Others seem to do ok, but for me, the cargo was filled to the brim along with the roof rack with just one kid going on a 3-day outing.

Consider going full size. We had a 100-series Landcruiser, which we absolutely LOVED. So much more comfortable on road trips, lots of storage, plenty of accessories available, and a very robust platform. If I didn't "need" (READ: want) a truck bed, we'd still have it.

Negatives were the MPG and it was also a bit much for a daily driver (although some love driving it daily). Just an alternative you may consider, from one father to another.

Thanks for the reply and your input

All good points, and most of them we wave talked about. Going in to this I wanted a 4rd Tacoma but since this will be my wife's daily driver she didn't want a truck, but I do.... Now with that being said yes we know it's going to be tight with all five of use in it and that is probably her biggest concern. Mine is the under powered issue. I'm worried about pulling my camping trailer. With the issue of all five of use in the vehicle hopefully my oldest fixing to be 16 will be driving his self and will not be in it much but we want to be able to have that capability if need and we have thought of the sr5 w/ 3rd row opinion. But I don't want the extra weight in the vehicle being this will be my wife's as well as my first new vehicle purchase and with that being said we will have for ever or at least till one of the little ones is old enough to drive. We have looked at bigger rigs such as the land cruiser but they are just to much new, and we were looking to buy new, I've thought over the bigger toyotas like the highlander and the sequoia but my wife really doesn't like them like she does the 4runner

See now that's why I ask, I have not seen this bumper yet and I really do like it, looks good. Do you have one ,how do you like it if you do? It Look very functional as well as its not flashy or gaudy. love the low profile design.

Yes one of my have to have options is the KDSS, we are looking at a trail, would love a pro but that's just out of our price range

I like the k-9 system and if I was going to mount a tent on top I would go that route and I still may but I kind of like the gobi as well. Not sure yet still looking. Have to get vehicle first. And yes I understand people saying to drive and take on a few trips before adding mod, and I am a believer in that and I will. I jut won't to see what is or is not available for the platform before I purchase such a big item. Would suck to buy and not be able to do anything to it. We already have a camping trip planned in three weeks, with or with out 4 runner. But it would be nice to have it so we could see what it is capable of.

Take a look at some of the Instagram pages. There are a few that showcase all the great mods that are available. @4runnermods @4runnersdaily are two great pages to look at.

I too wanted the Gobi stealth rack. They look awesome. But then I read about people starting to get rust and then the orange rust water would run down their vehicle. After hearing that comment I went straight for aluminum. Also a weight savings of almost 1/2 at the very top of your vehicle will make your ride much more stable - think driving on a slope...
Also the K-9 system allows for great versatility due to the tracks that you can mount to with bolts.

No, I personally don't have one - yet. It's on my list. They are highly regarded, and made here in the States. Southern Style is also working on a full bumper too.

Yeah... don't worry about the power. It has plenty. I don't deny that the ECU favors a more fuel efficient profile, but it's got plenty of juice. And if you find that you want more throttle response, just have the ECU reflashed. The thing has a tow rating of 5000 lbs, you'll be fine.

Yes Ive had dealings with the old orange rust juice on my Cherokee. I've got a two piece roof rack on it "defender" but what I have a problem with is the 6 pc rub rails I have mounted under it. Every time it rains I get rust streaks, it sucks. Won't be doing that. I have to admit the k9 really has gown on me, love the anchoring system on it. Looking in to things I want/ need to mount up there as solid mounts. Such as lights, sun shade, ect. Still trying to decide. Don't have to know today this is going to be a future thing, but I've done the hole buy a piece here buy a piece there thing. And no I don't have the money to drop tones of stuff on a build so I'm picking good reliable equipment that my be a little high up front but should pay for it's self in the long run. I still have to buy a piece here and there but I'm trying to make a list so I can have everything ready to order and a good game plan of what I need and what order it needs to go on rig so I'm not doing work two or three times

Congrats! Get it in to the dirt and post some pics!

Same vehicle here (2015) and I really love it for all of my uses. It's a keeper.

Thanks Dan, we do like it so far planing a camping trip in the next two weeks already

So I'm looking at floor liners first purchase for vehicle, and I'm split between the husky brand and the weather tech brand does any one have ether, thoughts?

Installed WeatherTechs in mine yesterday, and was happy with the coverage compared to WeatherTechs in my other vehicles. Much of the trains tunnel and nearly the whole dead pedal are covered.

There are a million photos of these things installed, but I'll go ahead and add a few more...

I just installed Husky's in my truck. Fit is 100% spot on and coverage is great. I've heard good things about WT, too. May just come down to price? Got mine on Amazon.

Get the TRD Pro, its a nice mix of a Jeep Rubicon and a Ford Raptor in terms of performance. But you also have that Toyota reliability. Perfect vehicle.
