Looking to buy a disco 2

Find a 94/95 D1. OBD1, so no worries for emissions testing in most states (idk how it is by you), and they are dead simple. Few sensors here and there like every other computer controlled EFI on the planet, but it has a standard-issue ignition coil and distributer... no funky computer controlled ignition. OBD1 codes are easy to read, because there is an LCD under the passenger seat that shows you the code, you look up the two digit number and there is your problem. Yea, it still can have weird electrical issues, but all of those that I have come across were due to dirty/bad connections. The RAVE (shop manual) is amazing... With electrical problems it literally tells you how to diagnose it. It says, step 1 test for 12v here, turn ignition on, if this go here if not go here and if this happens this is broken or that ground is bad. It's easier to figure out an issue in these trucks with that manual than it is to figure out a simpler car without a manual.

I'm not telling you what to do, but I am in love with this truck. There are two types of people on this board... one is the type who doesn't mind spending money and having someone else outfit/fix their rig. Those types of people are the ones who go nuts about Rovers being insanely expensive. I don't mind digging into a truck and DIYing it, and D1s ARE cheaper in that sense. D2 parts are more complicated and thus more expensive. When it comes to overall reliability, sure, a Rover isn't a Toyota. But I've seen more broken IFS Tacomas with their guts laying on the trail on the front page of this board in the past couple months than I've seen ones working :D

Jeeps have just as many electrical issues as Rovers. Its like they are American and British cousins. I've owned 3 Jeeps. All freaked out with more electrical issues then my Landies.

Ive only had one issue with a cherokee i couldnt figure out and it wasnt worth it to me to swap the computer as the last step in its surging nightmare.

Im having a hard time finding a cherokee i want to spend the money on. Ive never paid more than 1000 for one before and ever since cash for clunkers its impossible to find a good one under 5k.

Will the disco 2 seat sit lower. I'm really tall and I had trouble with the windshield

it has been awhile since I sat in a DII, yet, pretty sure I remember one of the changes from the DI is a better view out of the windshield.

what you experienced is what most folks who own a DI experience - the windshield isn't the best view and most complain one can't see traffic lights very well.

I'm 6' and I love the seating position. Traffic lights.. yea, that sucks but I usually just stare at my hood and watch the reflection, watch out the side window or just wait for someone behind me to honk if I space out and forget. Its not like you can get anywhere in a hurry with these things anyway.

The D2 isn't much better, in my opinion. I do the Disco Bob at traffic lights in both the D1 and D2. Try it, though.

Rover ergonomics are just weird. You'll find yourself smashed up against the door with a huge chunk of real estate between you and the passenger. It's not bad, okay maybe a little, but it is something you'll get used to. The visibility for off-roading is super, but seeing stop lights over head is a little difficult.

There are few mechanical woes with a DII that will leave you at a dead stop, but there will likely be a continual string of nagging issues and "must do" preventative maintenance things to knock out. There's also just a level a mechanical annoyance that finally got to me. Twice during my ownership I'd go to put the truck in gear, but nope....the brake pedal switch had crapped out. I then had to reach in the glove box, grab one of the two spares I always carried, and install it on the spot. Not hard by any means, but when out with the wife and friends for dinner, I felt like a proper plonker having to repair my truck in front of a restaurant so we could get home.

As you can tell by my user name , I was quite the finatic.

Buy a Toyota

The "Land Rover" thing is like dating a really really hot chick, who is crazy! Its a-lot of fun, you spend too much money, your up all night ending up sweaty & greasy from it, your friends are jealous, you get admission into some sort of weird club... but it gets mad at you for no reason, throws fits seemingly randomly, has unexplained issues which it somehow solves on its own only after you try a bunch of different things (and spend a bunch of money) to solve it... and yet you can't resist getting in it every chance you can.
That pretty much sums it up!

Hehehe, that made me chuckle.

What a cheap shot, get us while we are down and struggling like weak helpless prey. :)

To the OP, I was in your shoes earlier this year. Came from Jeep "got old", looked @ Toyota, "boring", fell hard for a 96' LAND D1 and purchased a Toyota. Looking back, I should have brought a LR and called it a love-hate relationship.TM
