Looking to buy Gen II - Couple questions

Hi there folks,

What a great resource this is for these Mitsu Monteros! I've been trolling for a little while now, just getting myself informed about these SUVs. I've also been watching for them as they come up for sale on CL and other various locations. I found one for sale in SoCal, unfortunately, it has a blown head gasket. After talking with the seller on the phone (he knows nothing about cars, period), he bought it and it overheated on him a couple weeks later, which resulted in a blown HG. He then spent north of $2000 having it repaired at a local "reputable" shop in hollywood. It ran well for a while after that, his words not mine, and then all of the sudden overheated again, the dude, "drove it until it turned off." Not good, he said it still starts and runs fine, other than the white smoke and milky oil. It also has a new transmission (he said was new, probably rebuilt) that is only a couple months old. He's asking $799 for it as is. It's a 1996 SR and it looks pretty clean. Oh! It's also a salvaged title.. :( almost forgot to mention that. He says it was in an accident in the right-front corner, so the Ins. company deemed it a total loss. He said it was "checked out" by the same mechanic who did the HG job and he said everything was in good working order and maintained very well. I find that hard to believe since the HG blew a week after the kid bought it, but I digress. Anyway, I'm no slouch when it comes to fixing cars, been doing it for quite a while now and I'm not afraid to tackle a HG job. I've been into DSMs for about 8 years, built, blown up and rebuilt a few 4G63's in that amount of time and my current DSM runs a mid 10 second 1/4 mile. So I'm pretty familiar with mitsu's. I'm thinking about going to look at it and making the guy an offer, as he sounded like he would take less than what he's asking. I've been looking for a Monty to take out on the weekend, do a little mild wheeling, not have to worry about getting stuck when out in the desert driving around, occasionally take it out camping with friends/family etc etc. I dont' have a lot of cash to spend at the moment, which is why this one caught my eye, let me know what you think.

Here it is here:

Thanks,

If everything else is in good working appearance/order and you are able to make repairs to the engine yourself, then I'd say its not a bad deal.
Check the frame and suspension to ensure that nothing is broken, bent or otherwise damaged. These trucks are pretty durable. I have a '97 wíth a salvage title, absolutely nothing wrong with it. Like wise it was in an accident and subsequently totaled by the insurance company because the brush guard cost more than the vehicle value.
Good luck.

The only thing that it has going for it is its price. So maybe buy it for parts, otherwise IMHO - RUN AWAY!, you will stick a ton of money into this one if you plan to get it running reliable. Start with something running good. Lots of time you can find decent ones for $1500 to $2000.

Yeah, the more I think about it, the more I agree with you. I think I'll hold off on it..
