i just got a canon sx110 it is a point and shoot digital but it is a little more advanced one. It is about step or so down from an slr. It has a 10x optical zoom which is great. takes good pics of the kids and has image stabilization.
I love it and it was about $250.

if you're not interested in a DSLR and all the add-on's that go with one of those, I'd recommend a Canon G10

HD Video to record special moments of the little ones, great picture quality, and for a few hundred bucks extra, you can get a waterproof housing to take it into the pool, beach, bathtub or where ever a young kid might ruin a normal camera

We got 46 of those for the kids this year. They love 'em. There's even a RAW hack! You should do it. It's like a baby G10 with the RAW hack.

I've only had mine for a month so i don't know about working in the cold.. but i did get the best buy insurance plan so if it doesn't work well in the cold.. they will fix it! haha
I love it though.. still figuring out how to use all the cool functions.

Based on another thread on ExPo, sounds like waiting until next month for the new Cannon G11 might be the cats meow. I have been looking at moving to a DSLR (Cannon T1r or XSi) but being a larger form factor, it might not be as convenent to carry on the fly. Still debating.

Not sure how well the G10/G11 would do in the cold. The telescoping lens and moving blades of the lens cover might freeze up unless you kept in an inner pocket of your parka. It's these moving parts that give me pause about using this camera on our dusty trails.

G10 does max 640x480 30fps... thats not HD. neither does the G11.

if you really want HD video as well, without going DSLR, id go with one of these.
