Morning all,
Quick background, I live in DC and haven't had a car for 7-8 years. Use motorcycles and scooter to get around everywhere. Hoping to do more outdoor photography/exploring/camping, and was looking for a decent, stock vehicle that can do it all.
The 90/110 TDi's caught my eye as they are good on gas, can have a tent on the roof, and have more than enough room for my darkroom and other supplies. Prices aren't too extravagant either, as both can be found for around the price of a Honda Fit.
1st - the decision betwen a 90 and 110 is a bit hard. My wife and I are looking to have a kid within the next year, and would like to bring him along. Is there an option for a facing foward rear seat/belt kit for the 90's? I've seen some for the softop 90's sold here in the US, but it looks like the belts attach to the rollbar, whereas the hardtops I am looking at have no hard mounting points.
2nd - what exactly should I be looking for in terms of inspection and paperwork? As mentioned, we haven't had any type of car for years, but I do all the maintaince and work on the motorcycles/scooters myself. I'm handy with a wrench, if I know what to look for. It sounds as though motors/transmission/transfer cases are pretty bulletproof, but frames/bulkheads need to be inspected closesly. Anything in particular to look for?
3rd - any experiences with dealer/resellers? I've been looking at the selection at roversouteast.com
4th - anything else I should be aware of?
Thanks! Sorry for the length, but hopefully the more information I give, the more I get in return.
