LR3 owners sound off, which tires?

When I get tires for my LR3 i'll probably buy Hankook Dynapro AT-m.. Come in tons of sizes and I can find them many places for around $150 per tire shipped... If you have 19's as usual you're screwed.

Anyone ever run Black Rhino wheels yet? Did a quick Google search and nothing popped up.

Heres a link. I want to downsize to 18" wheels for a better tire selection but its not all that easy finding 18" LR3 wheels that aren't either all scratched up or that don't cost an arm and a leg.

With that I can get 4 of those tires and then BFG AT KO2's for about $1500 shipped. Turn around and sell my 19's to eat up some of the cost.

I don't see where they make a wheel that fits the LR3. Most 18" wheels do not fit due to the close proximity of the caliper to the wheel from what I can see. Compomotive fixes that with offset/backspace and thickness of the wheel I believe which is specific to the LR problem.

Steel wheels are much narrower, however nobody seems to make an 18" wheel in steel with the BS/OS for the LR3 design. If you can find one, send it my way and hope its cheap cuz i'll buy 6 right now...hahaha

What about the 255/70/18 size? This is a 32x10 I believe and is the stock size tire that come on Heeps, so you can find some decent M/T's in this size too.

I've looked around for the 32 to fit. I think you are right but until I get my TR bumpers on front and back and my hands on a set of Cooper STT Pros to make a measurement then I'll know. I do have 3/4 spacers sitting in the garage for my factory wheels as I really need the MT for the Hawaii off-road experience. Most importantly, I want the right MT as some are more durable than others.

What type tire did you have in mind when you said "decent M/T's in 32 size"??????

Thanks,

E

Yes, when you combine powers with some aggressive bumper and wheel arch modifications, they will fit okay. I have just been super curious to know how pages like http://www.johnsonrods.com/johnson_rods_2_004.htm just say "Johnson Rods Required" and no other mention of what else needs to be done. I guess as far as they are concerned, it is all you need from them and the rest is up to your own ability to mount/fit the tires. There is a lot more that must be done, though. And I think more must be done on MT tires than AT tires with the side lugs sticking out so far.

I suppose not a lot of people are running a bigger MT on the LR3 and just stick with the DuraTracs that fit already or go AT. My rig is going to be an offroad and expedition vehicle specific vehicle, so an MT seems appropriate to me. Just one that does not wear itself to pieces on the way there and then make so much noise you regret it the entire way there and back (DuraTracs).

By the way, super jelly of your location.

Definitely sticking with an M/T for my second set of wheels/tires for the weekend. I might replace the Nitto AT with Duratracs in a bit bigger size for daily driving and light off-road after the Nittos reach their life but for now they will stay.

I am using the IID Tool so I do not have Rods and do not think I will go with rods. I am hoping I can go with a 32" M/T and if I have a total failure with suspension on the bump stops I can still limp off or recovery device for the AIS........not sure yet.

I am running TR front and rear bumpers (on the shipping now to Hawaii and be here next week) and willing to cut any plastic I need to under the wells to create clearance. I am hoping if I stay with a narrower M/T and a spacer that I will find the sweet spot. I see a lot of guys going wider and taller.........I just want taller as I believe an M/T hooks up much better in a narrower fashion on these trails here. Yes, they both have +/- to wider/narrow but I am seeing everything most are running on real deal over-landers on Defenders and LR/RR Camels throughout the years and pizza cutters got those guys/gals through everything so I am thinking my purposes are going to be good.

to whomever mentioned 255/70/r18, does that size rub? I would freaking love to run a skinnier but taller tire. :ylsmoke:

I know Duratracs and KO2's come in 255/70/18. I'm not sure of M/T's that come in that size, but I'll look around and see if I find anything for you.

I wish there were more sizes for KM2's in 18s because they usually run skinner and are one of the best looking M/T's IMO.

I'd also look at 265/70/18 which will be just a tad wider and taller, but not by much.

Yea, my concern is clearing the caliper. That's why I figured I would ask before buying. Discount Tire says it will fit but I have my suspicion.

What are you guys talking about with an 18" wheel not clearing on an lr3? They come stock with 18" wheels from the factory.

K02's would be just fine. Have you seen any run on these trucks in that size?

I tried searching and can't find any LR3/4's with that size. I did find some Land Cruisers with them and they look good, theyre just skinny. I run 33x10.5 KM2's on my Land Cruiser and love them.
