LR3 owners sound off, which tires?

... That's where the vehicle manufacturers recommendations come in. LR3/4 is 36/41 F/R? Between SL and XL? But LR says a load index of 112 is ok. Hmmmmm ...........LOL

Tire spec's for these trucks should really be XL or E-rated, not SL. Maybe that is what Cooper Tires was thinking as their "Sport Utility" category includes the Zeon LTZ, all of which are XL rated.
.

LR3 with oem 255/55x19 factory recommendation is 33/42. The door spec is purely for the oem tire sizes, not any of these oversized tires in the discussion.

I prefer the E tires but I do not think the vehicle should necessarily be sold with an E load tire when the vast majority of buyers never drive off pavement and the XL tires are fine for gravel forest roads on a stock vehicle.

Agree that E-rated tires are not appropriate for off the show room floor. At the same time SL are on the low end, your pavement pounding SUV. Thinking 112 tires are too low for such a heavy vehicle.

Then again LR saw fit to equip the LR4 with 19/20" wheels. As the 25th anniversary Great Divide Expedition found - "Other than some flat tires and scuffed wheels, we had no mechanical issues"

That could have been predicted.

I'm glad someone else is feeling this way. I just posted about this in another thread; people are way too hung up on thinking they need load range e tires on these things. It might be nice for some applications but they are absolutely not mandatory for what most people do.

One of the nicest factory delivered tires I ever had were on both my 1996 Discovery and then again on the 2004. The Michelin XPC 4x4. It had such a nice blend of highway rolling and really quite good off road traction. The 96 had 16" wheels and the 04 18". That was an XL but neither of those ever got built up heavy. It worked great for many years.

It's part of why 90% of the time now I run the Michelin LTX M/S 2 but it is in E load and should be due to the weight mine is most of the time. The XPC had much better off road traction though with the open blocks.

Hey, nobody seems as hot for the Nitto Terra Grappler these days. Why? Seems whenever a new tire comes out it's all the rage, like the Duratrac now. The Nitto is actually a really nice all around tread pattern although I don't know how well they wear long term.

I can vouch for the Nitto Terra Grapplers. I have the 255/60X18 size on my 2007 LR3, which is pretty much stock with no mods. I've done a little light off roading and have no complaints on the traction. Since it is my DD and most of my driving is on local roads and highways, they have been great. Road noise is minimal, only slightly higher than road tires, but best of all has been the mileage. I just went over 50k miles on this set and plan to replace them with another set of Terra Grapplers in a couple of weeks.

Actually, Nitto just launched the new Terra Grappler G2 last month... It looks almost the same as the original TG, but Nitto says the compound they use is all new, should last longer and perform better. To back that up they have a 65K miles warranty on P-metric and 50K warranty on LT sizes. I just purchased a set of these (LT285/60R18) for my LR4. I'll put them to the test right away, 3 days in Death Valley next week... That place is a notorious tire eater.

Interesting about the new TG and the warranties. Almost as good as the 70,000/6yr on my Michelin LTX MS2.

Wow, look at those sizes coming on line soon too: LT 265/65x18 , LT 265/70x18 and LT 275/65x18 The main reason I'd left them long ago was due to limited sizes and the wider proportion of the only one you could fit easily on an LR3, the 285/60x18. I didn't need the width and wanted the most diameter possible.

Ultimately, I may just cut some fenders and more frame at some point ;)

The Exo Grappler looks very good too, especially the notes about it's winter-ish compound. Sort of like some of what Nokian does with all year tires giving better winter grip through compound and siping while retaining summer preformance.

Just ordered the LT285/60-18 Terra Grappler G2s.
Initial report will be next week, snow report may not be too long after...

I've read very mixed reviews for the original TGs in snow, leaning a bit towards positive reviews.
The G2 tread looks a bit more aggressive, with better siping, so who knows..?

The only bad thing is I need tire like yesterday, so I couldn't wait for the LT265/65r18 G2s which are supposed to be available December 1st.

The Terra Grapplers - old or new ones alike - wouldn't be my first choice for "regular" snow driving. Neither would be the Cooper Zeon LTZs, BFG TA KOs, or any other A/T tire without a snowflake symbol for that matter. Among Light Truck / E-rated all-terrains, the LT285/60R18 General Grabbers AT2s would probably jump to the front of the line for me if snow / winter driving was in the forecast. Fat chance of that happening here in SoCal.

Yes, i was looking down the road of the AT2's, but i've decided to just run a designated winter tire with XL rating until the BFG KO2's come out.
