LR3 prices continue to fall

Yeah, likely the 2006 is slightly above the 16k mark, but there is a really nice one on discoweb for near that.

Like I said if I were looking in the 15-16k range, I'd likely bump my number to 17 to start getting at the later model RR. As close in price as they could be it would just be my preference.

And just for reference, I got an '01 Holland and Holland in near mint condition for 9k just about 3 years ago, so I although those are really low mileage and '02 if the owners were not really good with maintenance, you could still be looking at some $$. IMO if they have not replaced factory airbags at all it is likely that those need replacement as life on factory airbag for suspesion is low. P38 are notorious money pits. But I love mine and will do what it takes within reason to keep it in perfect working order (and stock). So far that has been about 4k over 3 years. If I ignore the fact that I had to replace the engine in my '93 LWB, it has been about 2.5k over 6 years.

I think that it is a matter of preference and I am not all that familiar with the newer vehicles, cost of maintenance, etc. So can't really offer much advice there other than people say really good things about 2006. Other than running into just a top notch vehicle in a P38, I'd probably just go with the newest that I could afford.

I have driven both the FFRR and the LR3 offroad. The LR3 is much better. The seats are better in the LR3 (for offroad work), suspension works better. More black plastic or scratches to hide in.

The LR3 is what engineers designed for more offroad functionality. The priority of the Range Rover is on-road manners.

So depending on your goal for the vehicle, if it's offroad go LR3.

Convert the LR3 to coil springs and you've got a pretty solid vehicle as far as reliability.

Oh, and "how could you not like a Jeep"

Easily, I hate Heeps.

its not only land rover LR3 dropping it value , most of the European made junks after 2000 is like that . look at bmw and Mercedes pries friend of mine just got 2006 CL 65 twin turbo for 40k

but there are some ppl living in denial that American cars are becoming better very fast in every way, even new jeep Cherokee performs as good if not better offload and on road than range rover

I'm actually glad we had this conversation. Just found a 2004 Merc-B E500 wagon for $10k...

Either way, they are getting older, the price falls. Not happy with that? Invest in some rare cars that appreciate in value. What are they? No clue but I see old iron go for millions on those fancy car auction shows.

As others have said, the LR3 is primarily seen as a fancy wagon. Kids tear up things. I know my childhood house was crap when we left it because my sister and I were little terrors. Also people don't take care of cars anymore. My friggen POS 1997 Chevy Lumina looks better than my g/f BRAND NEW car most of the time. Why? Because I wash it and keep a coat of wax on it. Also there aren't socks and water bottles all over the rear seat.

It is hard to find people who take care of their cars these days. My boss takes care of his, but that is because once a week a guy comes to the office and cleans it for him. Other than that, everyone else runs their cars into the ground. Heck one of my coworkers spilled coffee in his truck TWO MONTHS AGO. Stain on the console is still there.

So yeah, you have a car that no one has bothered to wash in 6 years. Of course the value goes down!

bri, you may be on to something here.

Doing a little searching on Autotrader for 2002-2006 Range Rovers, within 500 miles of LA (no rust), fewer than 100K miles, and price less than $16K, I found 16 vehicles for sale. One cost less than $10K.

Search nationwide, and I see 64 more Range Rovers, with six less than $10K.

Here's one for sale in Miami, 2002 Range Rover, 68K miles, $10K
http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/vehicledetails.xhtml?listingId=319244121

And here's a 2002 RR, 88K miles, in Las Vegas for $9000
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/3238710803.html

What do you think? 2002 Range Rover or 2005 LR3?

Ha!!! Not even a question. The P38A Rangie is a joke, totally worthless. The LR3 is amazingly capable, the P38A is a cheap vehicle designed by BMW to save money.

My P38 range rover has been very dependable and is very capable in stock form, better than an LR3. This is a doing the same trails in Death Valley that 2 LR2s could not make it up while my RR did it with stock EAS suspension. The P38 is the most under appreciated truck they made. It has solid axles, 4 wheel traction control, and the 4.6 v8.

That being said, unless you can do the work yourself, it will be a huge money pit. They are easy to work on with much less electronics than an LR 3.

I'm casually shopping for a sometime-replacement for my 02 D2. I'm very happy with it other than the mileage (around 11 most of the time, maybe 14 highway), and the cost of service (high-quality non-dealer).

The main vehicles I find to compare are the Toyota 4Runner (2010+) and the Jeep Grand Cherokee (2010+). I need to tow a 3500# trailer sometimes, I like to camp off down dirt trails, and I like the amount of cargo volume and the SUV form factor.

For me, here's the big win for the Rover: the windows. I'm used to the big windshield and side windows of the D2, and getting in a 4Runner or a JGC makes me feel like crawling into a cave - I can't see immediately ahead of me or obstacles on the side anywhere near as well in these vehicles, as I can in the Disco. I haven't driven an LR3, but I believe it has a similar setup to the D2.

I'm looking at low-miles 2007+ LR3s, and seeing $20K and up, which is reasonable; it's around what I paid for the 02 D2 in 05. 2010 4Runner or JGC are above $30K.

I can't agree with the P38A being more capable than the LR3. I've driven an LR4 and a P38A, I'm not sure the difference between the LR3 and LR4, but the LR4 absolutely destroyed the P38A in so many ways.

Ditto - here's 1 reason: Borg Warner TC

And here's another: LR3 has an optional locking rear differential

All:

I have an '08 LR3 SE and it's the best LR I have ever owned. Comfortable, capable, solid feel & great MPGs (19-20 HWY) plus the Jag sourced V8 is silky smooth. Mine has a factory warranty & has been great so far- though I read that the '08's on were better.

JustFred:

Having praised the LR3, I am considering selling (getting a Defender). PM me if interested.

Cheers,

Paul.
