I have seen the baja rack and the voyager rack, which of those two are better in your opinion? faults of each? what other options I don't like the plastic factory option.

I have the voyager rack on my DII and love it. Great build quality and looks great too.

I have the Voyager on my LR3. I like it now that it's installed, but it was a pain to get it on. I had to buy a bunch of stainless nuts and washers to rig it so it wasn't resting on the glass. I really wanted a gobi, as I had great experience with their rack on my JK, but they haven't been very quick on pushing out a rack for the LR3.

got a Front Runner on mine...
mounting was a pretty easy job - but you have to live with some wind noise...

i liked the straight front edge of the baja rack for the 40"led light bar I will add, otherwise I am afraid I will have to modify the voyager design. Also like the flat surface. I have an eezi awn tent already and thought of adding the foxwing awning, that thing is amazing shade when traveling.

The issue with the Voyager racks is they are not consistent. They show up missing parts and not fitting correctly. The Baja rack is far superior when it comes to build quality and finish.

how are the mounts, it says it needs a rear factory cross bar to attach, any photos?

No cross bars are needed. I think what they mean are the front to back roof rails which are there on all models. The mounts themselves are a clamping plate that slides into the roof rail. There is plenty of adjustment. Up front, the rack picks up the exsting roof studs which are under the drip sill closeout. You will have to drill through those. The only thing I didn't like about the setup was the foam pads on the mounts and the hardware, although stainless, is not what I'd like to see. Expect to buy some larger washers for the mount to rack interface.

All racks are a compromise. I have taken to welding extras to mine. The Baja Rack accesory line while extensive and flexible is not the best when it comes to secure mounting. They rely on a gasket clamp compression method that over time can get loose. I have had my rack for over a year now and I do have touch up nicks and scrathes. The steel they use must have a very low carbon content as it seems to rust very quickly.

JAK, are you an OJ subscriber? Check out the editorial from Chris Collard in the current Winter issue. I think very good news for you!
