Lumber rack as base roof rack?

Dont worry too much about the weight on the bedsides.

We build these at work for a huge plumbing contractor. 2x2 11ga with 3/16 bed caps

Two grown men cant pick them up. Have done 10 racks over the years and never had a failure

this is what I'm getting in a few weeks for my silverado.
I would go with a welded aluminum rack. my dad has racks that last longer than his trucks. the truck will die and he will gift the rack to one of his buddies. Yes, they are a bit more expensive, but i think they are worth it. also, with the welded racks, if you already have a cap, the upright metal just goes around and under it. Plus, this rack has a quick disconnect on the back crossmember so you can still put tall things in the bed.

I'm really interested in this as well. On the K5 I would have to have something that goes around the op, so the concept would be the same.

The green truck you posted has a Can-Back topper on it. That company is going through a rough patch and is not producing any products right now.

I've thought about using one of these:

Hauler Rack

Here are some pictures I've collected over the years.

I want something simple like the first one.

Thanks for the pics.

I have been thinking about it a lot and Im not sure I would like the look of a lumber rack for my truck. I would actually like something more along the lines of the
pic I posted with the custom rack. I would rather save my money now and make something I like rather than settling for whatever. I think it will look better also.
I kind of like the Blazer in the 4th picture you posted! I like it with the ladder.

I had another picture of one from Canada with a ladder that was even cooler and it was aluminum to boot. Can't find it though.

^^^^ yeah... I pretty much have the $$ that shouldn't be a problem. I should save it for something but I'm 24 and single so why not?! Time on the other
hand...that's another problem. Im trying to build my client base at work so it consumes allll my time. And I'd rather fab one up myself to learn rather than pay
someone to do it. I'll figure something out soon enough.

Thanks for all the posts!

I run a Kargo Master rack that fits over a canopy. It is great for my spare tire, jack, 4- 5 gal water jugs, lights and still lots of room for other stuff.

Quasimoto- Awesome rig. Thats almost exactly what I'm going for. How much does it rattle when there is no gear on it and you're driving down the road?

Thanks, It dosen't rattle at all, even on back roads. I did start to get some wind noise from it at highway speeds after I added the Lightbar to the front Pipe.

Good to know. I hate rattles, they drive me insane. Is it a fully welded rack or are there some bolt on parts? Anything special in the bed that you have (i.e. sleeping platform, storage, etc with pics?) Again, awesome rig, looks sexy!
